Improving soil drainage for plants in the yard?

Hello,

I want to plant a night-blooming jasmine in our yard. It calls for good soil drainage, yet I think our soil is pretty clay-y and doesn't seem to drain too well. Is there a commonly accepted way of improving the drainage immediately around the plant?

I was thinking of digging a bigger/deeper hole than I might need and using some combination of soil with sand(?) so that even if overall the soil does not drain well, the area immediately around the plant still drains better. Or is that a losing battle?
