So why is it illegal to make your own distilled spirits at home? The reason is simple - - - taxes. Taxes on beer and wine are low compared to the very high taxes imposed on whiskey, vodka, gin, and all other distilled spirits. Over half the retail price of a bottle of distilled spirits consists of taxes. Congress was pressured by home brewers and wine makers into letting them make their own alcoholic beverages at home in limited quantities. But the government doesnÂt want to lose any of the many billions of dollars it receives each and every year from the very high taxes on distilled spirits. Government officials argue that moonshine is a serious health hazard because many illegal producers use vehicle radiators in the process, which can potentially cause lead poisoning. However, safe home stills could easily be sold to solve that problem. The real issue isnÂt the health risk of contaminated alcohol, but the potential for enormous revenue loss from the production, even in small quantities, of otherwise very heavily taxed liquor."" I have been making wine for years. Some of the older stuff still in carboys,that I was going to pour out some over 5 years old(undrinkable),a friend mentioned he had a Mini still, asked me for it . 5 gal produced almost 1 and a half gal of 138% proof white home brew. He mixed it with some flavored bottle water to reduce it to 80 proof ..Not to bad... As George Jones sang... Comments (22)Weissman, that's hysterical. I know someone who pretty much said that! Agreed that you can't anticipate what buyers want. Even buyers can't. They say they only want a perfect kitchen, but then they buy the house that's too small, has bad flow, a tatty kitchen that was impossible when it was new. Why? Because there's a great tree. Now, you can buy a full grown great tree for a few grand, planted. That's a lot cheaper than the remodelling that the house requires, but people fall in love with the oddest things. People are also turned off by the oddest things. If they want your house, the stove isn't going to deter them, no matter what, but if the thought of radiant electric turns them off right away, and if there are a lot of similar houses to yours for sale in your area, it could take longer for you to find your buyer--you don't want to have people turn off to your new kitchen. That's why the sign. Also, put water in the pretty pot with a cinnamon stick and a drop or two of vanilla. Let the agent bring it to a boil lickety split, and make nice aromas, while demonstrating how responsive it is as she lowers it to simmer again. :) In the MLS, list "induction" for heaven's sake! Or "cook's favorite appliances". A little salesmanship on the agent's part is worth thousands of dollars and a quick sale. Comments (22)All of the above? I think it depends on the layout and your needs. As it is now, it sounds like the DW would be a good pick, but rhome raises good points -- maybe the layout and placement of the prep sink are the reason the sink isn't more useful. Mine is indispensable. I also have 2 DWs. They are important to me now, but most people are really surprised to find out we have 2. Two DWs would only be expected in a very large house set up for a lot of entertaining or for keeping Kosher. We knew putting them in that we could use the 24" space in a different way down the line or at resale (filling a hole is easier than creating one), but we got what we wanted for us for now....See MorePhotos of my almost done White and Walnut kitchen/mudroom remodel
