Durable, moisture-resistant floors
Comments (1)I have wood look tile...love it. But, vinyl planks are a goog looking, much less expensive option for moist areas. I would use it over laminate any day. Pretty easy diy project too!...See MoreMost Durable Kitchen Countertop Material?
Comments (32)Kathy642 - While Kevdp4 said "that no product is bullet proof", my experience is that indeed, some granites are bullet-proof. I've had mine for 8 years, and it looks like the day it was installed, I don't baby it, and I have never sealed it. What is important to realize is that there are thousands of granites, and you can't just lump them all under one umbrella--they vary in how bullet-proof they are. What you should google when you find a granite you like is its "absorption rate". The lower the absorption rate, the more dense the granite, the more bullet-proof. Probably the most dense is Absolute Black, which has an absorption rate of 0.05-.15%. My granite, called either Piracema or Wave, is quite low at 0.1-.3%, and has never needed sealing. By contrast, a granite that does need to be sealed frequently or it will stain is Imperial White with an absorption rate of 0.35-.45%. Other dense granites that are bulletproof are Blue Pearl, Ubatuba, Black Galaxy, Verde Peacock, Verde Butterfly, Platinum Pearl, Volga Blue. There are many more. I mentioned Absolute Black as the most dense, but the problem with it is that it is so black that it shows every speck of dust and reflects the overhead lights. When you go to a stone yard and see a granite you like, ask to bring home a sample, and do things to the sample like spill coffee or red wine on it and see what happens....See MoreWhat hardwood floor is the most durable?
Comments (13)Well, I'm not a pro by any sense of the word and I learned after we installed it (ourselves) that the Bruce high gloss oak prefinished flooring from Home Depot is not the favorite choice for a lot of folks, but it has sure held up beautifully for us.. Much better than the Brazilian Walnut from Lumber Liquidators we installed in our kitchen and dining room. We have a 5 year old lab and while we don't have kids, we live rurally where we have snow and lots of dirt plus my husband is hard on stuff. Still the floor looks as good today as it did 10 years ago when we put it in even at the entry ways. It's easy to clean, doesn't show dirt too badly and to my eye, the irregularity of the boards coloring gives it some character and is beautiful (IMO). We get lots of compliments. I do think that not wearing shoes in the house is key though as with any wood flooring. The plus side to using a real hardwood too as opposed to Engineered floors (and why I insisted on having real wood floors) is that they can be refinished and usually more than once. With the way ours are holding up, I doubt we'll ever have to replace them much less refinish them....See MoreNeed a Durable Area Rug that Will Withstand a 100-lb. Dog
Comments (30)We have an 80 pound Shepherd and have a polypropylene rug in the entry. She too lands on the rug from the stairs!! Keeps her from sliding all over as she is tearing down the stairs or running circles thru the house!! So, I vote for polypropylene. We got ours at Wayfair. Did not spend a lot and if it is destroyed, I will get another. We had a cheap wool oriental before this one that lasted for at least a decade and 3 years of our Shepherd. But, it was cheap and out it went!!...See MoreRelated Professionals
