What color paint? Pic of dining room, foyer, formal living room
Comments (11)Thanks everyone! We are installing hardwood throughout the entire downstairs. The revere pewter is actually through french doors off of both rooms but you can't really see itwell from either room so I am not so worried about that going with the other rooms as much. It is mainly this view I want to flow well. I considered van cortland blue for the formal living room but it might be too dark/bold for me. I tend to be more neutral/conservative when decorating. And yes I love the yarmouth blue but don't think I want it everywhere. It looks perfect in the dining room....See MoreBuild without formal living or dining room?
Comments (34)Through the years I've had both---formal living and dining along with less formal family room and eating off the kitchen, and (currently) what is commonly referred to as kitchen/great room/dining area in one open expanse. I have loved both, at different stages of my life. When my kids were young, I loved having the division. For everyday, we ate near the kitchen and I could observe kids playing in the family room from the kitchen. We often used our formal dining room when we had company, and it was not so formal that the kids couldn't join us there. Now, we just finished building a smaller home because we are ready to downsize and prepare for retirement. We gave some thought to aging in place, including not having more house to clean than we will use regularly. While we had a guest suite in our last home, this one simply has an oversized office that could accommodate overnight guests. In addition to our changing circumstances, we have a multiply handicapped adult child who needs a lot of care and doesn't tolerate the type of entertaining, with large groups, that we used to do. So our entertaining has also been scaled back and limited. There are so many different circumstances and stages of life that can dictate whether or not certain rooms are desirable. I would agree with the sentiments expressed here already that people should build the house to suit the way they actually do live---not someone else's idea or a fantasy of how you could live. However, I also agree with the caveat that it's usually not a good idea to deviate so far from the norm that resale would be difficult, unless money really is no object....See MoreHelp me decorate Dining/Living Room please

Comments (8)You CAN get help here. But you have to help yourself a bit too. Put the windows and openings on the plan you drew. Do everything with inches. Start after that, with a big purge of the kiddie junk and exercise functions in the space. You're worrying about "wasting space:"?WHAT IN HECK do you call the situation now?? It looks like basement storage! The view into the kitchen looks like it needs a tidy up too. So.........get your grown up panties on, and dig in.: ) Having a space to enjoy living and dining.....even in a house with kids, just means you have to put a little effort in.It's more thsn time from what I can see....See MoreBetsy Cain
