Help! Need to update living room! Suggestions?
Comments (15)You could at least remove the wood blinds and replace with fabric roman shades or curtain panels to add some softness. I would consider removing one of the wood shelves in the built in cabinets and putting your t.v. in the built in to keep all your focal points in one area. I also like the idea of painting or papering the back of the book cases. You can have foam board or thin mdf cut to size and paint or paper those to avoid doing anything permanent to the wood. Since there is so much warmth in the walls and flooring, I like the idea of using cooler colors to decorate as in the picture with blues and greens Holly posted above. It's really a beautiful space and the right furniture and decor will show it at its fullest potential....See MoreNeed suggestions - make my living room lighter and cozy
Comments (61)a couple more thoughts... a ceiling light fixture will help and bring some interest for sure. have you thought more about one? art absolutely will help and so will pillows. I also think you might want to consider new inserts for pillows if you can. and larger size pillows like 20inx20in, not sure how that translates in com, but large size pillows will help. consider the size of the insert one size up from the size of the cover so it fills out the pillow and makes if more fluffy. if you get feather down inserts i would consider that too. thought I would share a couple pics that show how just a few additional features will make a difference. I like the idea of a couple large pillows on the floor too. I would style the coffee table a bit too...See MoreNeed your suggestions in decorating my living room
Comments (12)You can get one of the sisal-type rugs at Ikea to put under your existing rug to expand the space. This also helps if you like a rug but don't have the budget for a large size. I'd look at slip covers, purchased or made, for the furniture and a few decorative pillows. For furniture placement: A trick I learned from my mom: actually move the furniture around to see how different configurations really work - take everything out except the heavy furniture so do that first, then add the small stuff, plants, etc. Some nice decorative plant pots would also help the space. It looks like your furniture is placed a bit far away from the TV. You also could consider getting one of the expanding/rotating arms for the TV to give you more viewing/furniture placement options. It takes a little time to get the curated, layered looks that you see in pictures, but it can be done and takes less than you might think. Good luck!...See MoreI'm stupid, need color suggestions for living room light sage, browns?
Comments (6)Not stupid. Picking paint colors is always hard, and some rooms are just particularly challenging. I've seen a lot of rooms on this board, and believe me that your room qualifies as particularly challenging. Before you tackle paint, you should improve your lighting, since it can make all the difference in choosing colors. The room IS dark (look at the difference between your photos and the realtor's professionally lit photos!), and if you aren't getting light from outside, you need to compensate with more, better interior light. I don't see any floor or table lamps in your furnishings; that's one place to start. Are the foyer pendant, ceiling fan, and dining fixture the only ceiling lights in the room? Any recessed cans? I would start with brighter LEDs in all the ceiling fixtures, and maybe tweak the color temperature (though I think your problem is more that you don't have enough lumens than about color temperature). Can you address the carpet on the stairs without tackling the carpet in the upstairs? I was just looking at DIY stair carpet removal and refresh with paint. It's a lot of work. (https://www.remodelaholic.com/under-100-carpeted-stair-to-wooden-tread-makeover-diy/). I wouldn't paint the wood trim. My sympathies on your divorce. Regardless of the circumstances, the process is difficult and disruptive and expensive....See MoreManon Floreat
