Need Quick Opinion: Dark gutters/trim to match new garage?
Comments (6)The picture of the dark garage door and gutters with the white Windows and column make the house look as though you are in mid-renovation while changing from one color scheme to another. The most flattering color for trim or windows of a brick house is to match the mortar color. Look around at brick homes that look especially nice----you'll see that they look 1000x better when the mortar matches as closely as possible to the trim paint, garage, door, etc. So, my recommendation would be to paint all the trim to match your mortar color and get the door in the same color of paint it. I know people don't like to paint Windows, but if yours are on the second half of their mfg's guarantee period I wouldn't hesitate. I have a brick house and over the past ten years have painted the trim three times....it took me that long to figure it out!...See MoreNeed advice for how to handle garage windows trim
Comments (30)Lascatx, I definitely plan a major refresh on the landscaping next spring. When I had my lawn taken out in 2011 I had a landscape designer suggest plants and I went with all of them. Since then I removed 3 enormous phormiums and this and that. There are a few other plants I don't care for, so it will be time to rework some stuff. I do favor purple/magenta, white, and pops of gold/yellow, esp. against a gray house. When the poppies bloom in March/April, it's happy time. #3 now looks silly to me. Someone said it was like squinty eyes. I think the only way I could get away with not removing the angles of my garage opening would be to leave it all trim color. It doesn't look so cramped that way. I prefer the squared off door. I am planning to redo my outside lights, once the painting is done, maybe adding a couple on either side of the garage door. Plus house numbers. It's funny, thinking to minimize the presence of my prominent garage, but it's kinda hard to do when it's so, you know, prominent. I can't exactly hide it, so why not make it look nice?...See MoreNeed your opinion about half moon window
Comments (17)The 'half moon' (as you describe it) window is completely inappropriate for your home. Yes it dates it right to the 1990's - and not in a good way. I would do a rectangular transom window, properly installed, if you are looking for more light. Also, as promised by others above, remove the shutters on the double windows. The windows are too large and your shutters too small to look functional. https://www.lifeofanarchitect.com/residential-architecture-101-shutters/ Take the time to study windows, doors, shutters and a little bit of architecture before you add this master bedroom addition. Ask your architect questions. http://www.oldhouseguy.com/...See MoreProgress! Opinions desired for garage doors and landscaping!
Comments (11)Great improvements so far. I would not choose either white or really dark for the garage doors since you don’t want extra attention drawn to them. Choose a color like in Beverly’s mock ups, that is just darker than the average brick color, preferably pulling from one of the brick colors. When you are ready to replace them, I still wouldn’t use dark doors because who needs a black hole on the front of the house. The dark window and door frames will pull attention over to the house and the entry. For landscaping inspiration, as you drive around, look for houses in a similar style that have an attractive landscape. Look in Houzz photos as well. At first look more at form and colors and how the plants are massed, and decide what appeals to you. One you have decided on a look and style, then you can worry about the specifics of what plants to use. Consider particularly foliage color and texture, and be sure to have some evergreens since the growing season in Ontario is less than half the year, so you want some plants that will be of interest in late fall, winter, and early spring. Widening the steps and the landing/walkway at the bottom will make the entry look more welcoming. I wouldn’t add plants between the drive and walk, but instead create a generous bed from the step to just past the left corner of the house....See Morejillian1996
