Wanting to update 90's maple kitchen
Comments (4)There are many charming aspects to your kitchen - but the function - oh my:) I think the answer depends on how long you see yourself in this home and how far out you are on being able to save up for some changes to the layout. I did new counters (quartz) backsplash and sink and the cost was $5000 and my kitchen is much smaller - I did no construction work. So, I see your possible renovations being around $10,000. I know you are thinking formica - but you have a lot of counter space. Butcher block is not as expensive - but that is adding a lot of wood unless you are also painting the cabinets. I probably would continue to save with the exception of removing the island - if it can be done without damaging the floor. I see an outlet - which means it has electrical - so who knows what the floor looks like underneath. I might also look into adding a small dishwasher next to the sink. To be honest - as long as you are keeping the cabinets, keep the soffits - no reason to add dust collecting shelves. I have vintage china on mine - just a thought. (My kitchen is in my idea book.)...See MoreModernizing my 90s kitchen
Comments (10)the cabs look white in the one picture, are they not? maybe a creamier white? (have you priced out getting those painted? for your kitchen I'm guessing it would be in the 6K range) I just had my wood stained cabs sprayed w/a white lacquer (I also had similar granite to yours, but had it replaced) . I agree about a new backsplash. I'd also change that range hood. you can remove the scroll and replace that middle section w/a piece of wood. I just had mine done in a similar fashion. I have much lower ceilings than you do, so my hood had to be smaller. But yours can be modified easily enough You can see a portion of my hood and the new white color. Or you could do something like these what do you think about painting that island? that warm cinnamon color just doesn't work w/the flooring or your grays. I had mine done in Wrought Iron from BM. a dark charcoal would work w/your granite too....See More90s Honey Oak Kitchen Refresh Help Needed
Comments (5)If your goal is to lighten up the house, avoid adding dark things to the already dark rooms. Add lighting, remove heavy dark window coverings, and check outside to see if there are branches that have grown to block sunlight from the windows. Pruning at the right time of year for your area can let in much needed light again. Start by replacing the light fixtures to improve the overall "dark and brown" look. Remove the over-sink bar cabinets. Paint the walls. Staining the cabinets can't be done well without stripping them, sanding, filling, staining, sanding, and so on. Contact the cabinet company with photos of the damaged areas. Ask them what clear coat can be applied over the existing finish. Chances are good that a clear polyurethane over a bit of stain pen will fix up those worn areas easily....See MoreWhat to do with all the brass chandeliers from the 80s and 90s?
