I can't believe I haven't replied to this thread before! I must have missed it. I have 5 PCdM planted in the absolute prime spot in my garden...that's how much I love the blooms. They grow very tall and upright, usually 6 feet tall by the end of the season, but they get pruned back rather hard after each flush. How many flushes? Well, they are still technically new in my garden....this will be their third season this year. The first flush is magnificent....HUGE flowers! So gorgeous and so scented. Also, they last a very long time in the vase, with nice stiff stems which hold the flowers very well. I usually have about three flushes a season, which is a lot for my cool, part shade PNW garden. So far, the second and third flush's flowers have not equalled the first. And even in my relatively cool garden, she does bleach in the hot sun after the blooms have been on the plant for a while. The foliage of this rose is not its strong suit. It does get crinkly and mildew-y as the season progresses, but I notice it's getting better and better as the rose matures. I think if I fertilize with seaweed, it may help....will be doing that this year (we use rosetone as well). My plants have regular water from an irrigation system. Rifis, Extra spraying of the tips is not necessary for midge. More is not better. Just enough is best, any more is just waste. On roses like: Quietness, Earth Angel, Quick Silver, etc., which get no black spot here, when it's their turn to be sprayed, only to about 4* down on the developing tip is sprayed. These growing tips are not sprayed any more at all once the developing bud thereon is garden pea sized. Midge no longer lays its eggs on tips at that state of maturity here. Essentially, if there are no vulnerable growing tips at all on one of my black spot proof roses, it gets no spray applied at that session. The method I use for midge control also keeps rose slugs and cabbage butterfly caterpillar damage to about zero, since they target upper growth also. The most midge vulnerable growing tips are those growing from basal breaks. They grow so quickly, and although the Bayer insecticide is systemic, it does not translocate to new, additional growth made after the last spray session. It only is absorbed into plant tissue with which it initially makes contact. Since basal breaks grow so quickly, just a few days after a spraying, they are vulnerable to midge attack. Every two week spray sessions are not frequent enough for basal breaks getting adequate protection. Moses

Hi Sultry, I hope they grow crazy and bloom a lot :) Moses I have realized I prefer the roses planted in groups when I can find the space. I would love to be able to smell them when I first get out of my car. My only concern is finding the proper planting space. I have not been able to see very mature specimens of this rose to figure out if it stays skinny. I am planting them 2 feet apart and I hope it isn’t too crowded.

The area to the east of my house between our house and the neighbor's is pretty shadowed for much of the day except for about 4 hours of direct sun maybe midmorning to midafternoon. That's my zone 4 pocket that is at least 2 weeks later in tulip blooms than the rest of the yard (along with the north side of the house in similar conditions). The roses that are rated to zone 4 survive there, but only the ones farthest from the house or tallest do a representative amount of blooming. Alexander Mackenzie is tall enough to outrun the shadows, and I have several Easy Elegance roses that are close to midway between the houses and they bloom reasonably well. The down side is that almost all roses prefer sun, and you won't get the kind of bloom in a more shaded area that you would in sun. Vap mentions how she had one sulk till she moved it and she's a zone warmer than I am. If that's the only place to plant the rose, then it'll probably do OK just not as robust as it would be in fuller sun. It's the tradeoff, and since I have roses planted in every conceivable angle from my house I have taken that tradeoff many times to plant in more shaded areas. Cynthia
