Bathroom ceiling not painted yet. Can I shower?

I just had a bathroom ceiling fixed after a leak with Hurricane Florence. The popcorn was scraped off and the surface was reskimmed with drywall mud, then sanded smooth. It looks great but the painter won't be here until next Saturday. How critical is it to not shower in that bathroom until I get paint on the ceiling? I'm told that it will just suck up the moisture if I do.

It's just me and a single shower per day. I can use another bathroom for showers if it comes to that but it's a PITA. I'll accept that if it means using the bathroom for showers will damage the ceiling but I'd rather not if a few days won't make a difference.

If it was the guy who applied the drywall mud who said this, then I would say shower elsewhere. When my shower was out of commission, I had to go to the gym, so having another shower in the same house is a real easy fix.

Drywall mud is a sponge for moisture. Don't use the shower.

Having a glass ceiling as opposed to the fully enclosed shower shown (an insulated ceiling) is going to pose some challenges: the surface of the glass is going to act as a condenser and rain cold water. Maybe not a lot, and not noticeable with the shower running but if you stay inside to dry off you are going to get dripped with cool water. The other aspect is going to be maintenance of both the interior surface (which will dry with lots of waterspots unless you squeegee cold water down on yourself) and the outer surface which is going to be a dust collector that you are have to get on a ladder and reach over to clean. Its an interesting idea, but for me personally, the potential negatives would outweigh the potential pluses.

Different question...is the ceiling sheetrock or plaster? I can't remember the exact reasoning (some one jump in if you know what I'm referring to) but I had a plaster ceiling that would not hold paint. Something to do with the moisture content of the plaster, I think. There is a paint specifically made for that problem. I got mixed reviews from 2 different Ben Moore dealers on whether it would work. It seemed to hold up well. I did this a couple of years ago and have since sold the house and left the paint.

Agree. You'll get a cleaner looking edge with the ceiling wood butting in to and covering the wall tile versus the wall tile butting in to the wood ceiling. I'd seal coat all six sides of each wood piece prior to installation. Basic MR-type of gypsum board on the ceiling wood be fine. Taped, mudded, primed. You could paint it a dark color in case you end up with gaps between the wood pieces. If using metal fasteners, consider stainless.

Just be careful to not splash water in it. I had to retexture ceiling in my bathroom, it was fine. Maybe hold off 24 hours right before paint and run fan to reduce moisture.

How critical is it to not shower? Wait until it's painted, or use another shower if you really can't wait.

Should have used greenboard. We put ours up and drywalled mud textured it. No problems
