Exterior Remodeling Design Dilemma

modernize 80’s exterior

After discovering issues with both the roof and siding on our recent home purchase, we decided to completely replace both. Given how much we will be spending, we would like to also improve curb appeal and hopefully modernize the color scheme to add some value. I have zero confidence in my color coordinating abilities with our brown brick. Could someone please help give me some ideas or point me in the right direction? I’m worried that any color I pick will make it look even more ‘80’s. Thanks very much in advance!

I'd stick with the wide lap like is over the garage for all the new siding. It fits the house.

You could pick up the mortar color for the siding, but one of the darker brown colors from the brick would work better, I believe. Just stay away from the reddish colors.

Landscaping will make a big impact too.

Thanks for the feedback. We are planning to use LP smartside (possibly vertical panels for the sides and back and horizontal in front). Owens Corning Duration on the roof.

I have a couple photos handy - one close up of the brick and the other a winter shot. Neither is great, so I will add a few more tomorrow.

That bow window is a significant challenge because the masonry follows the curve. I would remove the whole wall and replace with a huge window that follows the line of the roof. I also removed shutters and opened that front gable, replaced doors and garage doors with wood, replaced exterior sconces, enlarged the stoop and poured a walkway to the drive, painted the side door casing and downspouts to match the siding so they disappear. Sorry I didn't have time to find a better place for the garbage cans.

Take everything off the shelves. You may find that you can move the shelves as well and then do so -- remove them. Then you have a a lot of space to work with and you can add a shelf here and there as it suits your needs. In the empty spaces you can add some art work -- or some sculpture, and real plants! But first you'll have to see if the shelves can be removed. If you can remove the entire structure -- the better. Good luck!

Stay true to the original design intent of the house style. It is a shed-style home from the late 70's early 80's. Your siding is in great shape. Keep it maintained. I would re-stain the white trim back to gray and be done with it. Add pops of color at your front entry. Trying to make it 'more contemporary' such as 3 types of siding and etc will take away from the inherent look of what that house IS....a shed style home.

Your most prominent feature is the garage door. Is changing that an option? The cut in half color- brick base + siding top screams 80's, unless you change both to match (aka painting the brick) dated is your lot to bare.

I ordered a clopay modern steel door that has not yet been installed - walnut color w/out windows.
