Small Outdated Entryway

Help. I want to redo our entryway. It’s really small and outdated. I do love the floor in this area but I hate the wallpaper and the doorbell is so big. I was thinking of taking out the wall paper and painting the area. My living room is modern grey/ivory. Any tips??

I'm usually a fan if midcentury kitsch, but that door chime is huge! if its original to the home, you may find a buyer for it online... You can replace it with a modern small chime high up ( find the wire in the wall), or simply a wireless chime anywhere in the house.
The niche for it will give you a lovely place for a piece if art, or a flat sculpture.. Something to make you and your guests smile when the door is opened.
Given the wood color, I'd probably paint the entry a darker ivory, and paint the niche a grey or greige to really highlight the art.
Your most time consuming task will be removing the wall paper. and prepping the walls for paint.

I love the chimes! I also love the slab golden doors, I would strip the paper and paint only walls white allowing the floor, chimes and doors to be the stars. If white is not your thing a fresh green might play well with the floor and wood tones and grey in living room.

Location is everything! Painting the walls and your own furniture will go a long way. You could paint the oak; I don't mind oak but the grain is a little too pronounced on yours for me. But it's more expensive to hire out, and more time-consuming to do yourself, thank you might think. Try to work with it for a while. Wall color helps a lot. The main think you'll want to do is get some roll-outs for the bottom cabinets. Container Store, in Northbrook and Schaumburg and maybe OakBrook?, have their big sale going on right now, check it out. I think it goes on into February. And the ikea in Schaumburg will have some good ideas, too.

Personally I wouldn't go for vinyl. It never has the right texture to mimick tile, and tile shouldn't be too expensive in a space that size. What is that little shelving unit to the right of your sink? What I meant was, bring thr upstairs fixture downstairs, move the downstairs upstairs and place the downstairs fixture closer to the front door, rather than in the middle of the hallway and add another fixture toward the end of the downstairs hall or augment the fixture with recessed lights.

You can not place anything under the window as that would impede traffic and the required 3x3 minimum open space landing area for the stairs. If you want to integrate the window into a whole, then an art installation, with added art under it, to the left of it, can work. You need at least 1 similarly large piece to balance the window, and fill in with medium and small pieces, in a gallery wall type installation. Take the gallery wall all the way up the stairs for continuity.
