Ideal Ceiling Fan Height

S&C

Hello amazing Houzz community!

I need some help determining the best height to hang some outdoor ceiling fans on our covered patio. I've crunched all the numbers, and I can go with either a 12 inch or 6 inch downrod. If I go with 12 inch downrod, the bottom light will be exactly 8 feet off the ground, and the blades will be 8' 3'' off the ground. A 6 inch downrod would put the bottom at 8' 6'' and the blades at 8' 9''.

Everything online says to hang your fan 8 to 9 feet off the ground. Both downrods would position the fan between 8-9 feet, so which is better (6 inch downrod, or 12 inch)? I'm leaning towards the 12 inch with the thought that it should feel cooler (since we will be closer to the blades) and we have very hot summers where we live. I'm not sure that's actual science though! But maybe it's better to have the fan right in the middle of the 8-9 foot recommendation, which a 6 inch downrod would accomplish.

Thoughts? Opinions? Thanks in advance!
