Comments (14)Ooojen, I think the temps fluxuate both ways, the warmer it is the more true the color is, but too much sun will turn the color off also. Most commercial greenhouses grow them at opt conditions that we at home can't duplicate, so our colors are off from the greenhouse grown ones. I have it inside, but if it had set buds outside they would have been a more pinky tinge. GH, I've heard of Madame Butterfly, and it's on my ultimate wish list, but have never seen it personally. I know Smoley has it listed, but may not have it still. There is also one called 'Enigma' which is a monstrose form. You can only get it from a nursery in the UK or EPRIC, which is in the Netherlands, I think. I wish there was a Schlumbergera society, like there are Epiphyllum societies, that would open up some of the more hard to find ones to us US'ers....See MoreSchlumbergera sources?
Comments (9)I think I may have gotten it from there, but maybe not. I know I did get some interesting species and at the time there were several more than there are now. I have noticed since I've gotten back into looking for some that they are really much harder to find. There was one with my name along with a few epis that had a version of my name too at another place in CA that I think closed-- and I can't find those for sale either anywhere! I wish I had a copy of my old order. I'd be able to figure out which Schlums I had and then trace them to a new source maybe. I remember one had very small leaves and was very interesting. I also got opuntiodies although I couldn't get it to root. If only I had a better caretaker when I had to work overseas for a bit... I wouldn't have lost all of the little guys....See MoreVariegated schlumbergera
Comments (11)I have three of the Madame Butterfly Variegates, two of which I purchased off Ebay a couple years ago from a collector in Indonesia (and they were quite pricey!), the 3rd I started from these two. Upon arrival here in Texas from Indonesia they were quite wilted so pinched them way back. I didn't think the pinched off segments would make it but thought it was worth a try so potted them and they are now a beautiful plant! It has 9 plants in the pot and I'm anxious for them to get bigger as I love the larger full plants. I still am amazed that I got that many to root. Only the "all green" segments made it, the white ones didn't, but the new plant is a real combination of the all green, all white, and some mixed green & white segments, beautiful and as Vaughn stated above, quite stunning! They all bloomed last winter - beautiful. Can't say that I regret spending the money. There was a listing last winter on Ebay, 2 segments, rooted, asking $49 each. I also purchased a Plum Carnival Variegate which is a beautiful plant, very small segments, light lime green in color, very little variegation. It almost looks more like the true buckleyi Christmas Cactus(no teeth) as opposed to the Truncata Thanksgiving cactus. The Madame Butterfly variegate has the teeth. I've also purchased schlums that were variegated on the edge - they have all reverted back to green. The people who sell these get quite a bit more money for them because people do think they are actually a "true" variegate....See MoreVariegated "Christmas cactus" in bloom
Comments (10)From extensive and exhaustive searching over the course of many days, I've come to the conclusion that even as of early this year, the price of getting one of these absolutely gorgeous plants was reasonable (under $25), but now it's utterly absurd ($60 minimum and even over $100 in some cases). Of course I didn't even know this one existed until recently, so I missed the boat. If there is any chance at all you'd be willing to sell or trade even a small cutting of your variegated Madame Butterfly for a price that I could actually afford, I would be so very, very thankful....See MoreRelated Professionals
