Comments (28)VirgilCarter, This is an off-topic comment on how terms vary from place to place: What you're calling a shotgun house has another name in this area: We call it a dog-trot because a dog could trot through the two portions of the house, and middle-class farmers -- like my family -- built them. I knew of some when I was a kid (before everyone had air conditioning), but to the best of my knowledge the dog-trots have all been filled in now. They're a throwback to another era. What WE call a shotgun house is a tiny, three-room house, probably located in what we call "Mill Hill", a village of tiny houses built by the textile mills. Back in the days before minimum wage, the mill provided free housing to all its workers, and the "Mill Hill" was close enough that workers could walk to work /return home for lunch. Workers who put in X number of years received a pension and had their house free 'til the day they died. Wages were very low, but the workers didn't have many expenses either -- they had their houses, they didn't get bills for their utilities, and they didn't need to own a car . . . on the other hand, workers were essentially "trapped" by the mill. With no way to save, who could afford to walk away from the mill job? The only people who could realistically leave were men who joined the military. This system ended when minimum wage was instituted; the mill couldn't provide the houses AND a decent wage. Okay, I'm definitely off topic . . . What we call a shotgun house is probably about 600 square feet. From a small front porch, you'd enter the living room. A door would open directly to the only bedroom. On one side of the bedroom there'd be a staircase to an attic bedroom (shared by all the kids) and a tiny bath under the stairs. Another door would open directly to the eat-in kitchen. There'd be both a front and a back porch. No hallways whatsoever. All rooms had windows on both sides, which provided good breezes (this is the South). Today those old houses are snapped up /rennovated by people who rent them through HUD or other low-income rental programs. Few people would choose to live in these houses....See Moreplease help us design a hall linen closet/wardrobe!
Comments (2)What you store is totally personal. I have three IKEA Pax 36" wardrobes (in the white, raised panel design) and love them. I have 2 deep ones for my clothes (there's only one closet in the master bd, and it's 4' wide) and one shallow one for linens. Few halls will be able to take a deep cabinet. Ours is 6' wide, and because of the door layout, a 2' deep closet would be claustrophobic. We do not have many linens, but our shallow cabinet is FULL with just linens for our family of four, plus some dirty clothes space at the bottom. The nice thing about the depth, though, is that everything is very accessible. We keep our meds, tp, etc. in the bathroom. Triage everything BEFORE investing in more storage. How many towels do you really need? How many meds are old? How many are duplicates? Lots of people have Nyquil AND Mucinex AND Sudafed without realizing that there is only ONE effective OTC decongestant, ONE effective OTC expectorant, and ONE effective OTC cough suppressant. Have a small bottle of decongestant/expectorant for the day (cough suppressant optional), one expectorant only for night plus Afrin for night use in emergencies, and that's it. With a bottle of pain killers and a swig of the alcohol of your choice, and you can recreate whatever branded blend you desire with a lot less total space. The basic rule is to learn to check ingredients before buying and make sure you don't duplicate products....See MoreLong Hallway - Is there any possible solution for this problem?
Comments (18)Hello all, I would like to share and hear your comments on more information I added after you kindly helped me with the hallway. As I am placing the items, it seems as not that long anymore. Please bear with my drawing as i don't have the technical skills as most of you have , you can laugh of it as it is very simple... :) :) but I hope I can share the message.. What about adding some visual separation using the ceiling height or it would be too "busy", too many things at once?. Which painting would you place beside the sideboard? I was thinking of the rectangular Oops I forgot something.... I might be jumping too far ahead as we are still on planning phase. This help me to see if the layout will work with the painting and of course the ceiling is something I should decide. thanks again Thanks again for taking your time to help....See MoreYay or Nay to Front Hall Closet
Comments (24)Admittedly, I'm a Southerner, and we don't tend to take our coats into people's houses -- we always take them out in the "cold weather", but we usually leave them in the car "just in case". What I'd do in this situation: - Do away with the closet /allow a little more space in that small bathroom and a little more space in that narrow entry. - Install two of those narrow Ikea shoe cabinets side-by-side (which can look pretty nice when "hacked") and above them a row of nice, substantial hooks. This'll give your guests not only a place to hang coats ( a place where they can dry out instead of being in a closet) but also a small shelf to set down their purses, sunglasses and keys. - Guests aside, you definitely need a place to store your family's out-of-season coats, and you seem to have a good-sized closet in the mudroom. With this space being fairly small, I'd consider going with all sliding doors (so you don't need to account for door swing). - I'd like to see a set of hooks for the family in the mudroom too -- a place where coats can be hung quickly (because no one ever seems to actually put a coat away in a coat closet, except when it's been washed after its season). I also suggest posting your kitchen layout for review in a new post. Agree. A peninsula would be much better in this space....See MoreHKO HKO
