finished kitchen pics... but it doesn't feel finished
Comments (22)I absolutely love your kitchen but probably because it is very similar to ours. We have creamy shaker style cabinetry with some glass doors, midtone maple floors and the overhang of our peninsula is dark-stained maple - all the same elements as yours (except we have a granite counter - the very classic giallo ornamentale). Our kitchen has been finished since September and I am still playing with accessories and colours. I lived with it for awhile to figure our whether I wanted to stay in the neutral colours or whether I wanted to add some pops of colours. You do need to live with it and let it just happen and evolve. My Process then became: When I put some of my "play" dishes back into my glass cupboards (not the everyday ones) I noticed that blue was a common colour in my dishes and so I lived with those for a while and then I found some really cool orange/terra cotta plant containers at a local garden shop and they "spoke" to me so I brought those home and put ferns in them (they would actually look great in your space). The blues and oranges are really adding to my space. I will now wait a while but when I'm out and about I do keep my eyes open for little touches. I would wait before doing anything over your stove as you may find that you like the openness of the space depending on what else you do in the room. Don't forget that whatever you put there is going to get dirty and will need cleaning. What about a piece of metal artwork ? Just as an aside: I look at some of the beautiful kitchens that people have done with the fancy frou-frous and wonder if I should have done something like that and then when I see yours, which is so similar to ours, and I go -nope- ours is perfect for us. Again, I love the clean simple classic gorgeous lines of your kitchen and the accessories and accent colours will evolve....See MoreWalnut veneer that doesn't feel like plastic?
Comments (13)To get something to truly "glow from within" you need a high build of finish. Almost like putting it under glass. A hand rubed polished oil finish can give you something like that but mostly done on solid wood. The finishes on high end European kitchen tend to go for a natural look. Not seeing much of a film finish at all. That's what I'm showing here using the same Italian products they would use....See MoreSandy-feeling soil that doesn’t drain well?!
Comments (21)Ok, so not only is the crazy dirt not draining, stuff isn’t growing! We had 3.5” of rain last weekend and then unseasonably cool weather. As it warmed up this week, I expected the transplants and cool-weather plants to take off growing. No such luck. -English/Snow peas: doing the best -radishes, lettuce, arugula: direct-sowed and they have sprouted and kind of tapered off here. -tomato and cucumber transplants: I don’t think these have put on a single new leaf and they are slowly losing their green color. Tomatoes are planted in 2 places and both doing same thing. Would you think these issues are related to the poor drainage? Last year, before these beds, I put the last of my compost in each hole at planting instead of back-filling with native dirt. The tomato and cuke plants grew well at first but didn’t fruit a lot or ripen well. I was expecting that by prepping a nice bed and adding the organic matter things would improve but they seem to have gone backwards! Suggestions? Should I dig these up and replant them with bagged garden soil in each hole instead or something? If things continue like this we will have spent a whole bunch of money for a deer fence and 3 empty beds....See MoreThis doesn't feel like a zone 5 winter...
Comments (20)Ken, How true you are. That killer cold spell in December followed by moderate weather thereafter all the way until a mild spring will make you think all is well. Yet the unexpected blackening, racing daily, down, down the canes in March and April, until the crown is reached, shows that the damage was done way back in December. The blackened canes, the result of fungi and bacteria feasting on dead tissue, were held at bay by winter's cold, the canes looking so healthy and green when in fact they were already mortally wounded.
