WANTED: trade wanted: Swamp white oak acorns for my texas reds
Comments (0)I would like some Swamp White Oak Acorns to plant in a damp spot in my backyard where the AC dumps it's water. I would like about 5-10 acorns, in good planting shape. I can send you some Texas Red Oak acorns, I also have some other varieties I'm not sure of, one may be shumardi, another is similar to the texas red and shumardii-ish acorns but much larger. ship to: Tracy Ballard 4616 S. Bryan St. Amarillo TX 79110 send me your address and I will send you the acorns you want in return. thanks in advance...See MoreShagbark Hickory nuts or White oak acorn questions
Comments (1)shark, The hickory nuts won't be harmed by a few weeks at ambient temperatures, but the white oak acorns, in a bucket may dry out enough to lose their viability - and if you have bunch of them in there, they might even 'go through a heat', and you'd lose them all. The acorns need to be collected as soon as they are ripe and drop and stratified 'til you get ready to plant them next spring - they may germinate and begin pushing a taproot radicle before you get them out, but I've planted thousands that had already sprouted - if you handle them gently, they do just fine - I often pinch off the tip end of the radicle so that it will begin producing a branching lateralized root system from the outset. The hickories can wait a while, till the main crop drops. After removing the husks, I'd 'float-test' them - place the nuts in a bucket/pan of water; viable, well-filled nuts will sink. You can leave them overnight, and some of the drier viable nuts that float initially will eventually sink, but most that float would be better utilized by cracking and eating. Check out the article linked below -should have good detailed instructions on how best to collect and store nuts & acorns for planting. Comments (9)do you have any experience growing things indoors in winter ???? in my z5 adrian MI house.. though you can easily control light and water .... humidity is the hard one.. with a forced air furnace ... not to mention.. having to build a light stand gizmo .. with lights adjustable from 6 inches to 3 or 4 feet ... i have no doubt it can be done ... the question usually revolves around how much $$$ you have to invest ... in building the setup requisite to success ... the converse being.. its usually cheaper to buy what you need in the first place.. see link as an example.. 5 two year old plants for $16 ... put oak in the search function there.. and they offer different kinds ... [otherwise i have not ordered from them.. and i am sure there are other similar places] ken Here is a link that might be useful: link...See Moreplanting swamp chestnut oak acorns
Comments (6)Spruce, I've planted them directly in the ground and in containers. When I planted them in containers, I just left the containers outside all winter long, but then we don't get that many freezes here, and when we do, they're usually mild, barely below freezing and the cold spells they come with aren't long lasting. We had snow recently for the first time in years, but the temperature never got below freezing (how did that happen?) and it's since warmed into the 60's and low 70's. So my experience won't help you with your Virginia climate. If I were you, I'd experiment and plant them several different ways to see which works best. Since you're so close to their natural range, and since they're oaks, I have an idea that they'll survive your winters. Sherry...See Moreant888rvlu
