I know you didn't ask me but I like the Dapper Tan used on the decking.

Your guess is as good as mine, downspout brown. I found a color combo chip that shows a similar color to downspout brown, Umber.

How do you think Dapper Tan will look against that weathered green roof? We are located in the deep South and this building gets a lot of sun. I worry about fading with a dark color. The Macadamia is on the same color swatch, but much lighter.

Yeah, dang. I feel ya. I'm in central Texas, and my front door (and garage) faces west. Is there something (topcoat, or a specific procedure) that can help with this, anyone know?

Well, poo. :-( Folks are awfully "flag" happy, I see. Much to everyone else's detriment, in the long run. Unfortunate.

Chef -- What kind of prep work is involved in painting the brick? Does the "smearing" have to be removed, or is it simply painted over?

I really hesitate recommending Macadamia (or any other light color) on the body of the garage, since it'll draw the eye away from the house. :-/ But I also very much sympathize with the reluctance to go dark (like Umber) due to fading.

Which direction do your garage doors face?

The garage doors face due south.

The German schmeer effect is created by paint. No mortar involved. That's why it looks so bad. I just have to paint.

Don't forget the house trim color, Antique White. (Actually, I had to do a color match for the trim when I painted. The main house trim is a very creamy white of some kind.)

I was hoping to get Cpartist to photoshop it and fill in the potential colors. If someone else has that capability, I would appreciate it.

No matter what you do to the walls and doors, you still have the highly visible roof, and white columns and trim.

I am getting some idea of how the green metal roof affects the results.

I'd be glad to help you out on colors homeshef, but I'm not that great on them. I'd rather stick to conceptualizing.

But now if it's what to place or not to place in a kitchen island.....Hmmmm......I'm your guy! (inside joke).

They all look like varying degrees of baby poop. The question is which is the most attractive shade of poop?

Do you think the simple building starts to become awfully busy with the white, contrasting door trim? The greater the contrast between the siding color and the trim color, the greater the value contrast and visual "busy-ness"...

Would it make for greater harmony and appeal if the door trim and the columns were not white? Or is the goal for the small building to call attention to itself?

I would prefer to paint it all one color. But, the trim on the overhang and the columns are bright white vinyl. They won't take paint. I'm stuck with those items being white. The trim areas around the garage doors can be painted the same color.

My goal is to make it recede, not be the first thing that you see as you look at the property as a whole and be complimentary to the larger house structure.

If it were my garage I'd probably paint, the entire structure, the trim color of your house and add some architectural details painted the same color. Maybe tone on tone generic whites. I'm not a pro but I have an old wash house on our property and painted the whole thing the same trim color that's on our home. It looks great!

You could also hire an artist to paint the garage doors with colorful art. That would look wonderful and be famous within a thousand miles, :-)
