Apologies to Sandra, but here's a question for which I can't find an answer. Hanging a pendant in the center of small room with 8'6" ceiling for main light source, how far from ceiling? About 18" or 24", or would latter be too low?

Measure up from floor to 7’. 7’ is good clearance for most heads. With your ceiling height you have to calculate the height of fixture. With 8.5’ ceiling you will need a semi flush fixture. A “pendant probably isn’t best choice. Post some photos so we have better perspective of total space.

I have the pendant, didn't like the surface mount as well. It may have been better, but too late now. Here is pic from ideabook, and then blurry shot of space. I do think 7' sounds good. Thanks for your response!

Update - Good news and bad news. Hung the pendants today. 30” from counter - perfect height! Left extra wire in ceiling just in case. BUT then went to hang the chandelier. No way I can have both in my kitchen. The way the kitchen is laid out and how you enter the room made me realize they totally compete with each other. Way too busy! Problem is - I was already hanging the chandelier when we realized it. Wire cut - and now I’m stuck. Can’t return .... big boo boo! It was not a good afternoon. I can sell online, but will lose a chunk of change. Realized before I start buying any more furniture, lights etc I need to get the help of a designer. I am in way over my head...New open floor plan and I’m lost....

Awe Sandra. So sorry. Are you sure it won’t work? Post some photos. Sometimes people get hyper focused on one element and loose sight of the big picture. Let us see if we can help!

Flo - I wish it was just the light itself...we renovated our kitchen. It was connected to 2 family rooms. Almost fully open to a small family room on one side, and a small doorway (32” opening) on the other side. We are a family of 5 and no one ever used the larger family room bc of that small opening. It seemed cut off from the rest of the house. We opened up that side, added a breakfast part and stools so it’s now a useable part of the house. We hired a kitchen designer. That was our mistake. He did a great job with the kitchen...but we needed someone to look at the big picture. I started to realize this after it was too late. Everything was going in. I kept thinking I’ll find a way to pull it together when the kitchen’s done and yesterday when I put the 2nd light up I realized how hard it will be ... I am in way over my head. It’s a very long open space. Open floor plan gone badly. I’m beside myself. I need to now just focus on finishing the last few details in the kitchen and bring in some different interior decorators, designers ... I’m not sure what - to figure out how to fix this.

Gee Jan There is always judgment based on exact shape of fixture and other factors. Just giving “guidelines”. If you post photos, i can be of more help.

OH gee Flo. Sorry, just don't like folks leaning over an island and bumping tall heads. Lots of six foot plus teens and hubbies out there : ) Bottom of light at 36 on an island is just 72 from floor....lol

I placed our pendants 78" off the floor even though they are way out of head butting range over the large island, besides they look vertically centered between floor and 12' ceilings.

At 6"1', I'm with Jan.
