Orange brick ranch with dark green roof. Help!

We just bought our forever home. 1977 orange brick ranch. New roof by previous owner in dark green roof. Why did they pick green!? Thankfully it's very dark green with hint of black. I had wanted to do a Joanna Gaines on it and paint the brick an off white. But the thought of that becoming a huge maintenance issue is concerning. I have done some research and I see the paint products in primers and sealers are much more advanced than they ever have been. Suggestions? My original plan was to paint an off-white and do Cedar posts on the porch, get rid of the white railing, and put up Cedar shutters period a new door of course. I had thoughts of a door in a mustard yellow but now I'm rethinking that too. I am wanting a more rustic feel. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Romabio, don't do paint. Most people who advise against painting brick have never painted brick, seen painted brick or lived with painted brick.

Living with a color of brick that isn't pretty because there "might" be maintenance issues defies logic.

Why people think it's better to live with ugly brick vs. doing something about it is beyond me.

I don't get it.

The brick on that house isn't too bad but IMO you're not losing too much if you do a white mineral paint to change the color.

The factor of a green roof it morphs into a whole other animal and I think you're spot on with your design goals.

Congratulations on your new home! The landscaping design Yardvaark shows is very nice. If I were in your shoes, I would remove the shutters and paint the garage door a color that blends with the brick so the garage door doesn't pop out. I also would paint the front door an accent color to draw the focus to the front door. Ideally I would paint the ugly brick but that isn’t an option now. I want to downplay the orange color. The roof is being replaced with ”Weathered Wood” by Pabco (laminated premier shingles) and the gutters will be replaced at the same time since they have to come down to repair something to do with the roof replacement. The porch will be stained a walnut brown to get the red tones out. The windows are vinyl and have to stay white. Planning to paint the trim around the garage and above the windows (and the basement window trim) close the the mortar color. The gutters will be replaced but the (ugly) maroon trim won’t be changed immediately. I’m thinking of matching the gutters to the roof and eventually will paint the trim at the roofline either dark gray or off white to match the mortar. Front door will someday be replaced with a frosted glass door. Should the storm door stay white? The front door is not staying white but not sure what color. Also not crazy about the white garage door. Thinking of trying to use a gel stain to match the front porch (which will be stained darker brown no red undertone). Also should the under side of the porch roof be the same color as the porch, which it is now, or painted/stained a lighter color to show off the height of the porch?

Sage green is the first color that comes to mind. I'm usually very against painting brick, but I think it could work here if you wanted to go more of a cream color all over.

Ranch homes with some French details like courtyards & double door entrances and shutters were quite popular in the 70s. Here are some other examples of how they have been addressed. What your house doesn't need is a 'pop' of color. Move in and live there for a bit and then decide what the house needs. I'll bet paint on the exterior is not the first item on the list. A new landscaping plan is definitely required.

Thank you!!! I have been convinced on painting it for weeks.. then I started to 2nd guess myself. You're right, It's not too bad and we could live with it. My alternate plan would be to keep the brick as is, yank the railing, beef up the pillars by wrapping them in cedar and stain black? But... reading your reply I'm feeling better about the original plan. I believe there's a masonry sealer. Need to do more research on that.

Check out Romabio. It's a mineral paint just for masonry. You can get it from the Home Depot now.
