Are those 2.2 cf stacking washer/drier units worth it?

Can you wash a comforter in there? Was looking at the Bosh combo. About how much do licensed plumbers charge to install?

My house came with the Bosch stacked 2.2 cf. I would say you cannot wash a comforter in there.

You might want to try a duplicate post to the Laundry Room Forum. Houzz does let you select multiple forums when you start a thread, but I don't think there is a way to add them later.

Anyway, on washing comforters, it depends on the comforter as I learned when I researched this same question last spring.

Down comforters (also sometimes called "duvets") don't seem to be a problem. They collapse when wet so they tumble properly when washed in compact front load washers like the Bosch models. With quilted comforters -- the ones stuffed with cotton or other batting --- it depends on how thick they are. Have you seen Rococogurl's long thread discussing her Bosch 500 machines? There was some discussion of washing queen sized matelesse coverlets and thick mattress pads in her Bosch 500 (Wat28401uc). But, if you have thick, quitled comforters stuffed with cotton or other batting, a king or queen size one with plump batting probably will not fit. Even if you can cram it into the washing machine, the batting may be too thick to allow the quilt to tumble properly in a compact front loader.

My research turned up videos and reports going back a decade about queen-sized down comforters being washed in Bosch models with 2 to 2.2 cu. ft. drums. I'm recalling a YouTube video by somebody named Lynn who reported washing a thick down comforter in a current Bosch 500 (same model as rococogurl's). I also found a number of videos and reports of even king sized down comforters being washed well in the current Miele W-1 washers. I mention the Mieles because their drums are only an imperceptible 0.06 cu. ft. larger than the Bosch washers' drums. The Miele videos I specifically recall were on Youtube and posted by "RCH" but I think there are a number of others out there now if you want to check them out. Also, there is some discussion by "Cal" of washing king-sized down comforters in the Mieles; you can find that discussion in the very long and long running thread "Miele W1/T1 Washer & Dreyr" [sic].

Combo

Your comment about a "Bosch combo" was intriguing. Is Bosch now offering us North Americans an all-in-one combination unit (i.e., one which both washes and then dries in one single appliance)? Or, instead, when you said "combo," did you mean combining a separate washer and separate dryer into a stack? (As might be done with, say a WAT28400uc washer and a WTG86400uc condensation dryer.) If you are buying an all-in-one appliance, can you tell us where you found it? If not, then never mind.

Licensed Plumber Charges

FWIW, the appliance sellers in the area where I live will provide free delivery and installation and do not need plumbers. Does your place not have hookups yet or do they need some work? Or, do you, maybe, live in a town or city that requires washers and dryers to be installed by licensed plumbers? If so, it might help you get answers if you stated the area or city where you live as the prices plumbers charge vary by region and also by what is involved in making the installation.

Thanks to all who've chimed in. This sort of general discussion always provides helpful context. However, I am hoping for specific anecdotes about Jenn Air Pro Style and GE Cafe appliance purchases -- should any owners of those products stumble upon this thread. I have a sneaking suspicion we should be purchasing the extended warranty on the two most expensive items: GE Cafe Refrigerator (25.6cf; SxS; Stainless Steel) CSCP5UGXSS Jenn Air Pro Style Duel Fuel Range (4.6cf; Stainless Steel) JDS8860BDP I'm considering pulling the trigger on the GE refrigerator warranty simply because the product line is so new. As for the range, the often-repeated perceptions about Jenn Air's declining reputation for manufacturing quality has me wary. for the most part, I like the Jenn Air products so far, with some caveats. for instance, our old Maytag dishwasher had interior rack inserts with far superior layouts. And already, we've had to replace the Jenn Air microwave door using the basic warranty -- within the first two weeks! The two door latches stick out over an inch from the door frame, and one of them caught on a robe sleeve and broke in half. The latch wasn't steel, as it should be, but a cheap caste metal...

Best washer = Miele, best dryer = ??

On dryers, it seems the bigger the better. As it has been noted, it is possible with the larger washers like Miele W48xx, Duets, HE5t, etc, to actually overload the dryer. I had the Miele T9800 for about 5 months. Some observations. Overall a good dryer. List price is actually reasonable (I paid $1200). A little smaller at 6.4CF than other competitive dryers (7-7.3CF). And limited temp controls and very limited manual timer/temp options. Almost too limited, YMMV. Loud, but bearable (mostly air flow sounds). Nice SS drum, filter, all glass door, and reverse tumble. Normal setting sometimes slightly under dried clothes, but not a big problem. I now have the HE5t matching Kenmore (Whirlpool) dryer. As posted, I returned my Miele W48xx machines. I did considered for a while just keeping (or getting another Miele T9800 dryer) to go with the HE5t. Eventually matching considerations and the ridiculously low price I ended up getting both the HE5t and dryer. The Kenmore high-end dryer as compared to the Miele is bigger (7 vs 6.4 CF), shocking quite (like real quite), seems to dry about the same- time/dry level. Very flexible temp control and timer/temp options. Almost overkill. but nice to have. Digital readouts (including time remaining) instead of Miele status LED indicators. No SS drum nor option to get one. Overall pleased but lack of SS drum is concern. If the Miele dryer was a little larger, a little quieter and had more manual temp/controls, it would be strong contender. The Miele looks like a high quality dryer, the Kenmore looks so-so. Looked at LG, and Samsung dryers. Both had SS drum options, but overall quality level seem to be more in the Kenmore/Whirlpool range and price about the same as Kenmore. Where LG and Samsung lead if a very big 7.3 CF capacity. So far I have not missed reverse tumble. I had it both on the Miele and older Bosch dryers. I don't think you need it on these larger dryer (or need is very reduced). On the Miele T9800, the reverse tumble was actually used very little of the time. It was also interesting on the reverse tumble phase because the dryer suddenly would get very quite- apparently just reduced air flow noise. This indicated the noise was not the mechanics of drum but just motor noise and air flow issues. My gut feel is the Miele could (or should) cut the air flow back for home use. For a commercial dryer, it is probably ok, but most home users would make the trade-off easily. Also, it is sucking your conditioned air out your home at a high rate. So no free lunch on reduced drying time (if any) over other more standard dryers. In a basement- yes. Upstairs- no.

It's interesting how much people are talking about the bending-down issue and front-loaders. A top-loading washer mostly eliminates the bending, and some of those can have a drier stacked above them (or come with one attached). Maybe the difference is that you're thinking of high capacity and I don't need that. But at least with driers since they're essentially all front-loaders, I think it's just about universal that people WANT it to be up higher and trouble arranging that together with the washer is the only reason they're not all up high like that. At the laundromat I go to, for example, there are two rows of driers, and the ones in the top row get used first. I'm planning for my new house but haven't built yet. There's room for a washer and drier side by side, but I'm thinking of a stacked unit anyway, not just to put the upper half of that space to use and turn the left or right half into free closet space, but also because it's easy that way to have the drier up high and eliminate bending with a top-load washer below. If I stick with separate drier and front-loading washer instead (to save money since the cheapest set is cheaper than a stacked combo), I think I'll build some kind of stage to put the drier up on, at least a few feet tall if not full washer height, just so it isn't on the floor. How flexible is machine location with a given set of pipe/vent connections behind them? Can the connections on the back wall of a closet/room that's wide enough for two machines be set up to accept side-by-side machines, stacked machines on the left, or stacked machines on the right equally well, or would the connections have to be set up for just one machine arrangement that's decided on ahead of time?
