Poppies--can we talk about the?
Comments (54)Melissa, I was wondering the same thing about the Oriental poppies. Just wanted to post an update. I planted out all of the annual poppies two weeks ago, and they have made it through several nights of freezing temps, LOTS of strong winds, etc. and survived just fine. They are even starting to show some growth. I'm pretty certain now that the problem last year was that it was too warm by the time I planted them out. That high altitude sun can really fry young sprouts! I'll try to get some pictures of my baby poppies to post. Bonnie...See MoreCan we talk about layering?
Comments (4)I fall in the more-is-more style of decor so layering is arranging several things on a table or other surface in a harmonious way. For example I might use a runner, a lamp, a plate on a plate stand, a plant, a statue, and a decorative box all together on a buffet or hall table. Or I might use several candles in candlesticks arranged in a group perhaps on a silver tray. Another example is using several pillows of different sizes or shapes on a sofa or bed with some arranged in front of others and a throw as well. One thing I like to do is overlap framed pictures on my mantel. Using an area rug on top of carpet is more extreme layering. I think layering has to do with embellishing, textures, as well as patterns. The layered look, while the term may be fairly recent, goes way back. Victorians decorated this way with the layers of window treatments and doilies under every tschotske and ornament. There are some styles in which layering works better than others I believe. Contemporary style would lend itself to less or even no layering whereas English country cottage, Victorian, even Traditional almost require it....See MoreCan we talk carpet before I go shopping?
Comments (14)Pretty much anything in the $3 a square foot range up will be decent quality. You want nylon or smartstrand. For a bedroom, nothing beats a plush for comfort under foot. It feels exactly like it sounds, like plush velvet on your bare feet. But, if seeing your footprints or vacuum tracks bothers you, maybe a plush isn't for you. Maybe you'd want a frieze, which is a short shag. But, you walk on the sides of the fibers on a frieze, so it won't be as durable as with a plush where you walk on the ends of the strands. However, it will hide traffic paths more, and can also feel soft because of the bulk of the yard. All carpet these days has built in stain protection except for the very cheapest, so don't let something like that in a "name" deter you from buying what feels and looks best to you. As with anything, take it home and see how it feels underfoot to you. Or, you could do the matching wood (did you ever get that project done?) in the bedrooms (selling upgrade) and have a really nice wool carpet edgebound to be a large area rug underneath. You get the benefit of taking the rug with you at selling time then....See MoreCan we talk about this house plan?
Comments (34)I'm a "guest", too! It matters to me what I see when I enter my own house! We typically come in through the garage, and the garage is in the back - a basement garage. My late husband and I realized that we needed to landscape the area around the large concrete pad in front of the 2-car garage. It looked like the "trade entrance"! So, we put down railroad ties, and put plants in around the fenced perimeter. Over the years, more has been added, in particular up agains the fence on the outer side of the driveway. Ours is an unfinished basement that became a SEMI-finished basement. We put up drywall, and painted the walls, put down carpet and added some leftover furniture to the area where we enter. We walled in the old open basement steps and put risers where they had been open in the past. What a transformation at little cost! Now, I get to enter my home and see something attractive! You may not care what your "guests" see (and yes, family ARE guests!), but others may well do so. Aesthetics and beauty are very important to many people. If it were not part of our DNA, we'd all still be living in caves and there sure would be no GW!...See MoreRelated Professionals
