Window Treatments and Transoms
Comments (4)It really depends on what you want to do. Usually people don't want to cover up the transoms after they've spent alot of money for them! I generally see blinds in the lower windows leaving the transoms open because of the trim that separates the 2. When I do drapery treatments for windows with transoms, I personally like to treat the entire window going above the transom; otherwise the window tends to look squatty and cut off. But, sometimes people want to treat the lower window only. Why don't you live in your home for a bit and see what kind of glare/sunlight you'll get and then decide what to do....See Moretransom window treatments
Comments (8)My experience is most people go over them to add height and block out the sun. But I have installed many below leaving transom open. Comments (10)I have transoms above every door on the first floor of my 1965 house. However the divider at the tops of the doors is very narrow. In the living room the effect is floor-to-ceiling and nearly wall-to-wall glass. They are standard 6'8" doors and the transoms have a glass area of about 11" high. Some antique houses here have fanlights as in your photo and eight foot ceilings although those doors are usually about 6'6" instead of the modern 6'8". So in my experience, yes, you can have transoms with 8' ceilings and a reasonable appearance....See MoreTransom window light blocking treatment to match....
Comments (3)For the narrow height of them, I'd use window film. It will diffuse the light coming in, but not block it, unless you get a patterned design. Here's a Pinterest page showing some ideas with window film. https://www.pinterest.com/explore/window-film/?lp=true...See MoreLil S
