Comments (5)Home Depot stock cabinets aren't the best constructed. Sure, they're heavy duty enough for a laminate countertop, but I don't think they'll hold up in the long run to granite countertop. Their hardware is also pretty poor to use for a long term installation. They're designed for builders who have to rip them out after every tenant has destroyed them. Now, Home Depot does carry American Woodmark cabinets, and they are a BIG step up in quality compared to their stock cabinets. They're also not that much more money. I'm not trying to make you feel bad about your budget. I have done plenty of kitchens in that range, just not usually with upgrades like granite tops, or with that low a level of cabinets. I respect the fact that 10K is all you want to spend, but putting granite on those cabinets, when the cabinets may not last you 5 years, is misspending that limited budget. If you have to allocate more of that budget towards cabinetry on the front end, then do that and put a laminate coutnertop in for now and replace down the road with granite when the budget recovers from the initial remodel....See MoreLayout for hall bathroom
Comments (16)Weedy I know you constantly renovate properties and the idea of redoing a bathroom now, and then having to redo it again in 20 years doesn't seem like a big deal but I don't think it's very sound advice to say not to worry about it now because you are going to want to do it over later anyway. (And that's probably not really what you mean anyway) There's a big difference between updating a bathroom cosmetically and having to redo it for functional or accessibility purposes. There's nothing wrong with getting an accessible door (32'-36" wide), an accessible shower (Even if not technically fully handicap accessible) and a layout that it at least fully adaptable NOW, and not having to think about it again. It would be very easy to get the shower right and use a wall hung toilet, and with the vanity and linen cabinet toward the lower right corner at least get the Plumbing right for a wall hung or accessible sink with finished floor and wall around it. Then you could install a more conventional vanity and a linen cabinet for now and if you Need it to be accessible in the future take out the conventional cabinetry and put in the wall hung sink...See MoreNeed ideas for kitchen remodel on a tight budget
Comments (9)Paint the toe kick the same color as base cabinets so it disappears. If you change out the hardware, choose it before you paint. You may need to fill existing fastener holes and drill new ones. Always prepare new hardware locations prior to sanding and painting. There's also a few inexpensive under cabinet lights that will improve the work area. Look for plug & play extendable lighting. Look on Amazon....See Moresuzanne_sl
