Comments (31)I loved reading this too! As a result of reading these tips and techniques years ago, we always make a 'filter box' from a plastic file folder type container with a handle lid, we've also used shorter ones depending on the pump size. I like for the box to be twice the size or better than the pump. I use hubby's hole saw attachment for the drill to create many holes all over the container, leaving the bottom and a couple of inches of the bottom sides undrilled. I buy the nylon netting in the fabric department at Walmart for maybe 79 cents a yard and wad that up in the bottom, place the pump inside and route your power cable and pump output through the holes in the top. Stuff another wad of the nylon netting over the top and close the box. Sink it into the pond and finish your plumbing. I place a pot of iris or a decorative rock on top to disguise the filter. I do the whole thing for $10 or $15. I do leave the foam filter in place to prevent the netting being sucked into the intake. If you have fish, I highly advise rinsing all of the materials (plastic box and netting) just to be safe....See Morecopper fountain and pond life
Comments (4)The good news is that copper is toxic to hair algae, also known as blanket weed and string algae, at concentrations as low as three parts per million. The bad news is that above this concentration copper is toxic to fish. However, copper is toxic only in its ionic form and copper ions readily precipitate out of solution at pHs above 6.8. So if you can keep the pH above 7 you may not kill the fish. The toxicity of copper ions to fish increases as water temperatures increases. It is especially a problem during hot summer months. Copper can cause oxygen concentrations to drop, which may result in fish kills. Pond algae is a major source of oxygen production and by removing it this source of oxygen is also removed. Copper is also toxic to invertebrates, such as snails, and also most of the zooplankton in a pond (daphnia, rotifers, etc.). If your water is low in alkalinity, or if you have a heavy algae bloom and no aeration, copper must be avoided....See MoreWill installing a fountain in the pond help with noise?
Comments (16)I feel your pain. I've got four acres. We've researched everything, walls, tree, bamboo, berms, acoustifence, fountains, and waterfalls. The best and most effective solutions are masonry fences and earthen berms. Both are expensive. Berms take up a lot of real estate. They have to be about two times as wide as they are high. Any gaps will allow sound to get through the gap. The farther you are away from the source of noise, the harder it is to deal with. Trees and vegetation do help from the stand point that the eye won't follow the sound. Looking at your aerial, I'd say a fountain will not be noisy enough to do the trick. It's got to be between you and the noise source. Even though most of the noise is gone by bedtime, we run a box fan in the bedroom at night to make a constant noise. Wouldn't you like to take a shotgun to the boom boxes? I keep hoping they will grow up and move away. While we have one or two of those upon occasion, it's the big diesel pickup trucks and the little rice rockets with no muffler. It's not too bad when the police set up a speed trap and slow down traffic. Once they leave, the speed goes up along with noise from the tires and the acceleration. We are planting a large stand of various trees and bushes between us and the road. If my landscaper lucks into some fill dirt from one of his contractors, we will try to add a bit of a berm, too. Fill dirt is expensive and hard to come by at the right time....See MoreRelated Professionals
