What is the countertop material? Marble?

Someone one told me to use a paste of baking soda and a couple drops of water. Don't rub it, just pat it and let sit for a little bit.

Yes, it is marble. How do you know if its etched or just a stain? Everything else like toothpaste or water has came off but I left a cleansing bottle on it last night and woke up to this this morning. I am just very upset because it's a new vanity and I know i should of been more careful but I wasnt and just hoping someone has had experience with this and knows what will actually work :(

That is etched. Cleaners that are acidic based will etch marble. Nothing that is not pH neutral should be used around marble.

I'm going to offer you a little unsolicited advice. Now, I don't want you to think I'm being harsh, so imagine us sitting at your kitchen table, sipping coffee, and you've told me about the stain. I've gasped, and then in my Southern drawl exclaimed:

GET OFF THIS FORUM and GO CALL AN EXPERT. Otherwise, you are most likely wasting precious time.

They have, undoubtedly, seen these types of stains before, and will be most knowledgeable in how to fix it. Good luck! I truly hope you are able to get that stain out quickly.

Just call a local fabricator. I"m sure this is a common issue.

There is special paste(or rather powder that one makes into a paste) that can be used to take etchings off marble

which I purchased and used and it did work, even on the oldest stain, so now I'm a believer(c)

(I didn't like using it at all because half of my time was spent on trying to read the instructions in the tiniest print possible..yes I did have glasses on. Since then, my cleaners left another etching..lol..I'm waiting for a better day to get to it again)

Sorry, nothing will take off etching other than the fabricator's machines. Aprilneverends uses the word "stain" in her post ("and it did work, even on the oldest stain, so now I'm a believer"). That powder will likely make your etching larger and worse. Etching means that some part of the surface has been eaten away; the stone itself has been changed. Stains though are different, and can be drawn out by poultices as mentioned here.

it's an etch, what I described..in terms that it can be seen only when light hits it differently

and it's from some acid product my cleaners left on the counter. They were still in the house when I saw it, moved on to another room..I closed the door and started removing their stain..sorry, etch.., didn't tell them anything..wasn't the first time either. What would I do, ask them to polish it off?

I had rings from red wine etc (marble, kitchen, different country) that would pale by themselves with time and became hardly visible.

Here, I found questions and answers on the product..they say there which etchings will have a chance to come off, and for which one ought to call a professional

I think people are assuming "cleaner" is some kind of acid based bathroom cleaner. Is it that, or is the "cleaner" some kind of facial cleanser? I think that will make a difference in assessing whether it's etched or just stained.

That does NOT look like etching to me but just an oily stain that can potentially come out with a poultice.

yes, it is a face coconut cleansing oil that i left on there.

any recommendations on a good poultice brand?

Seal the marble so this doesn't happen

Wait until you get the stain out and then seal it. Sealing will help prevent future stains, but will not prevent etching. If the stone is honed, you may be able to get etches out with a very fine grit sandpaper—my GC showed me how to get etches our of our honed Carrara marble kitchen countertop.

If it is shiny, it’s polished and sandpaper won’t work. I agree try a poultice to get the remainder of the stain out and then seal.

How To Clean & Remove Stains From Marble & Granite

1. First blot the spot to lift as much of the substance as possible.
2. Next, spray it with water.
3. Now slather it completely with a paste made from baking soda and water (to the consistency of sour cream). ...
4. Leave covered for at least 24 hours, the baking soda will dry and pull up much of the stain.

Polished marble should not need nor will it take a sealant. Honed needs to be sealed. Tin oxide works on light etchings if the poultice fails to remove the ring. Tin oxide powder mixed with a bit of water to make a slurry helps polish the etch mark back its orginal shine on polished marble.

Polished marble on countertops and floors SHOULD be sealed (and definitely does take a sealant) with a professional quality impregnating sealer which will provide a higher degree of stain resistance and provide a longer interval between re-applications (as opposed to the lesser quality and more economical sealers). We recommend 511 Porous Plus. Sealing of marble walls is not necessarily required depending on the the exposure to harmful substances. Your best friend for all natural stone countertops are trivets and trays to hold products (with cork or felt backing so as to not scratch the surface). When spills of any sort occur, blot, don't wipe, immediately. Oils take a long time to try. Give this some time. Use only ph neutral cleaners, such as MB-5 on a regular basis.
