Why do you hate maples so much?
Comments (38)To edlincoln: Sorry, this is not about maples. I have been following your postings and plight about landscaping in the Cape and Island area of the east coast. Here I have a bit of experience. It is not easy. It should be noted that the whalers returned to their New England homes with all types of foreign plants with the hope they would survive the rigors of salt air and wind. This type of landscaping and plant selection requires trial and error, locating the 'quiet spots' on a property during a raging nor'easter where healthy plant growth can be encouraged and planting young, low stock that can grow and adjust to the wind. The later is very important. There are lots of tricks to baffle the wind. And some excellent gardening books dealing with your area situation. Now that I am way off topic, an additional bit of learning for those owning seaside properties where almost nothing will grow despite following all the "rules". That area is covered with sections of unmarked Indian burial sites. It has been my experience, and of others, that very few introduced plants will grow in and around such sites. It occurs to me that this may be your problem and a bit of historical research might be helpful....See MoreSo why exactly do worms love coffee grounds so much?
Comments (26)I don't think it's correct to say that worms "love" used coffee grounds, at least not in the way they react to melon rinds or corn meal, by visibly flocking to them while wiggling happily. I think coffee grounds just have a much longer lead time before they become worm-edible, possibly because it takes a fungal process to break down the cellulose component of the beans. I used to put my used coffee grounds in the bin still in their paper cone filter, but I found this creates a long-lasting clump of grounds that tends to dry out and become impervious to rewetting, and takes an extraordinarily long time to start breaking down on its own. The other drawback to solid masses of grounds is that they will heat up, which you can really notice if you dig around in the bin with your bare hands. Now I dump the grounds out of the filter and mix them together with the other food scraps....See MoreWhy do newspapers charge so much???
Comments (19)Problem is people don't want news. They want Duggars, Kardashians, Orca Windbag, The Spew, Ellen Degenerate, Judge Floozie and other similarly "reputable" sources for getting their "news". Cable seriously wounded both newspapers and local news stations. People want things NOW, not two hours from now. They want to turn on faux news channel and watch someone irrationally bellow about some ridiculous thing and be able to see the high-speed chase du-jour. Makes people feel good because it only happens "there" never "here". Then in sort of a poetic justice, satellite made a dent in cable, so they had to go off into other things like telephone and internet. I used to get a newspaper from up north and one from the central part of the state but when it takes the postal orifice upwards of 2+ weeks to get the paper to you, it's of little use or interest so I quit wasting the money. Plus, now I can use the internet for most of the reasons I wanted to get the papers. It's not just the newspapers that are suffering from it. Local news stations have been hit hard by the internet. Gone are the days of serious in-depth investigative teams. Maybe some will dedicate a part-time reporter or two as their "I-team". No sending reporters to cover big events outstate. Why? Use an affiliate's reporter via satellite. Even the days of a reporter, photographer/cameraman and tech are long gone. Now it's a multi-media journalist who had better be able to operate the editing gear his/herself when they get back. TV stations operate on skeletal news staffs now. Even the days of highly paid anchors are dwindling in most markets. I remember when the local television stations became weather conscious. The ones who could afford it bought their own SupercalifragilisticexpialaMegaDoppler radar systems. The main local stations here had between 12 and 17 on staff meteorologists covering weather 24 hours a day. Now there's 3 per station. And a lot more duties than before too. Apparently the weather has improved since installing Pinpoint WeatherShield SuperStormStalker Radar. And no bad weather at night or on weekends. It's a changing world....See MoreI don't know why I'm in so much pain.
Comments (51)I'm thinking RA is more likely, though. I woke up with pain in my wrists this morning, and I learned that the weird taste I've had in my mouth on and off for weeks could be an RA symptom, too I never had any taste symptoms, only bouts of extreme pain and stiffness, accompanied by severe swelling. The swelling comes from the immune system attacking the joint. Never chills with a flare. RA flares are so painful, it overwhelms. My first flares were in the shoulder....family Dr said it was probably Bursitis. This went on for years. When I finally got a DR to order a test for RF, it came back at 2300. Any idiot can diagnose that one, and I finally got treatment. I had a bad flare while out of town...wrist swelled up so bad, ER first thought it was broken. In fact, had a flare a couple of months ago, and even though I said it was a flare...insisted on an Xray. Only thing that can calm a bad flare for me is a shot of Demerol, and these days they are years apart. Now, with RA, morning joint stiffness is normal. When I get up in the morning, I have to pull myself on my feet by holding onto bureau, and the first few steps are excruciating. And my RA is under control :)...See MoreAMS
