Remodeling Bathroom- Custom shower pan with bench question
Comments (10)To further clarify, I just found a picture of a similar shower to mine. Instead, they inserted a premade plastic shower pan. As you can see in this pic, there drain is exactly center over the standing area. Im thinking I should either reduce the depth of my bench so that it is truly 3x4 shower pan so the drain is center. Or just move the drain forward 1.5 or 2 inches so that is centered.. I plan to install frameless glass very similar to this shower. So i realize that the drain will be visible from outside the shower and thus should probably be exactly center for aesthetic purposes.. To me, though, the bench in this picture (which i believe to be 11 or 12inch depth) is too shallow to sit comfortably.. The bench I made is very comfortable size wise, with room to lean back somewhat.. P.S. I am installing a custom mortar shower pan, and will not be using a premade... Would appreciate any opinions or ideas, as I am trying to put this pan in immediately.. Here is a link that might be useful:...See Moreadvice for small lake cottage bathroom redo and front door
Comments (9)Marti8a, >Wow, beautiful view! Thanks! That's what sold me on the house. the house was originally a small two room fishing shack that got added on to... it's not layed out well inside but I'll put up with it for the view. >>Is the house on a pier & beam foundation? If so, how high is the crawl space under it? It doesn't look like much, but if the subfloor is plywood, you can do all your >>plumbing from inside the house anyway. The back of the house is on cement (so, kitchen and bathroom) and no crawl and the front of the house has a very small crawl space. Any one going in there would have to be very very slender! And not claustrophobic! >>I hate to say this without knowing more, but it really, really sounds like that bathroom needs to be gutted. Ceramic tile doesn't fall off the wall without a reason, usually moisture behind it, or if the house has shifted >>and the walls moved a bit. What I should have mentioned is those delightful pink tiles are plastic not ceramic. I just think they have fallen off due to age and neglect. >>If you took out the tub and put in a shower, you could have a decent sized closet at the end. But if you really like having a bathtub, I'd just move the tub down to the end of the wall. The drain probably goes right over to >>that toilet drain, somewhat like this. I did give the idea of taking the tub out and just having a nice shower but right now am leaning away from that. But a larger closet is certainly tempting. There is very little closet /storage space in this house. >Is that just debris under the sink or is there any rot under there? > it's what's left of the old insulation. I just had to have a bunch of the pipes going to the well pump replaced... I still have to get rid of the rest of the insulation and clean the area up. Thank goodness for a nice neighbor who came over and did the majority of that work. He was a blessing! It's so nice to have running water again! >>I bet the sink used to be in the place where the two pipes are coming out of the floor, and someone decided to move it over to the counter. It looks like a wall sink >>that doesn't really fit on the counter. I bet you're right. I don't have my measurements with me right now but that is a very narrow counter. >Is your well pump in the cabinet behind the tub? Yes. I wish there was a better place to put it. >Are you going to be doing this work all by yourself or >will you have any help? I'll be having to hire help. I'm not knowledgeable about most of this work so it'll be much better if I hire a lot of it to be done. Thanks for your help. Susan...See MoreHelp with Small Bathroom and Curbless Shower
Comments (21)I'm afraid adding a curb would make the shower narrower. To contain the spray, is it possible to put the entrance to the shower at the back instead of the side? For example, going from palimpsest's proposal, could you have a curbless shower, putting the plumbing on the wall where the window is (if it's allowed where you live) and walking in from the back of the shower (close to the closet)? OR Could you reduce the length of the vanity a little and move the toilet so you can put a curbed shower across the back (you may have to waterproof the window)?...See MoreSmall Bathroom Layout - Neo-angle Shower?
Comments (11)Thanks for responding. My other showers are 36 inch wide, but longer. I am thinking about choosing a rectangular shower but placing the shower door on the RHS, that is, hinges on the RHS so that I can make the shower door 28 inches wide (same as the other showers in my house). It does mean that the shower door would open into the center of the room (not against the wall) and I would be placing the shower valves on the opposite wall from the shower heads. I'm just worried that if I plan for a 24" shower door, by the time all the tile and curbs are in place, it may end up with. at best, space for the minimum allowed 22" door. The problem with space for the vanity is not the entry door; the problem is that I need a walkway from the entry door past the vanity and shower to get to the toilet. I don't want to have to turn sideways to squeeze in-between the vanity and shower to get through. Recommended space is 30 inch minimum width. As I said, I cannot change the entry door or the toilet. I replaced both of them two years ago, without changing the location. I think a 30-inch entry door may be the minimum to meet code. I hate pocket doors -- impossible for me to open. And even if I did like them, it would not work here. The electrical panel for the whole house is in the wall immediately to the right of the entry door. The wall to the left of the entry door is at an angle. So, no place in which to slide a pocket door at this location. I cannot use a barn door here as this bathroom opens to the hallway. My teenage son uses this room and values his privacy. It's difficult to find proper locks for barn doors. And difficult to contain the smells in the bathroom because a barn door is not a tight fit. I did put a barn door in the space between my master bathroom and master bedroom, but that's an en suite. That barn door was custom-made and cost $900 alone, just for the door, not counting the hardware and installation. I waited almost a year for the correct hardware to arrive, after it was installed with the wrong size track....See Moremillworkman
