Powder room off kitchen: Yay or Nay?
Comments (40)Here are some resources on sound-reducing construction. The one immediately below, and the one that is hyper-linked, look pretty good. The other one (''Suppressproducts'') might just be an advertisement for their products, I am not sure. Basically sound is vibration that is transmitted from the source to your ear by rigid materials (sound travels well through hard materials like wood) and air. To reduce sound, you want to reduce the transmission of vibration. Air gap is better than a rigid connection. A heavy, soft material (e.g. rubber) is better than an air gap. Techniques are: - Double layers of drywall with dampening material like the referenced ''green glue'' between them (not simply screwing one sheet of drywall to the other) - Staggered studs w/ separate floor plates (essentially making two walls, no physical connection from one side to the other) - Sheet of sound dampening material between the staggered studs (reducing sound transmission through the airspace) - Sealing openings in the walls (electrical boxes, holes for plumbing, gaskets around and under door frame) - Special doors, or (less good) a conventional solid door, or (maybe an in-between alternative) a conventional door w/ a sound dampening layer on one side. - Dampening material between subfloor and joists, and between ceiling drywall and joists - Sound-proofing paint (I've not heard of this stuff before, I am skeptical it does much) Since the bathroom is a small space, you can use these techniques without too much additional expense, and just the loss of about 6'' if using staggered studs and double drywall layers. http://www.soundproofingcompany.com/index.php?/library/articles/elements_of_room_construction http://www.supressproducts.com/soundproofing-articles/Soundproof-Sheetrock.html Here is a link that might be useful: Link...See MoreTransition from Arts & Crafts to Art Deco?
Comments (106)I went looking for images of those elements. Ribbed glass panels in cabinet doors is easy enough. Here's one in a bathroom vanity: Ribbed glass (or ''seeded'' glass) is also often found in period light fixtures: As for marquetry countertops, if you asked most kitchen cabinet makers for such, I imagine they would gape blankly at the gabbling woman. But there are plenty of companies doing stock and custom hardwood marquetry inlays using CNC laser cutters. Here's the thing - they are doing it in floors. Google ''hardwood floor inlay'' and see. Yes, many of the rosettes are infeasible for a 26'' counter, but look for the ''border'' designs - or create your own. Assemble a 26'' wide section of inlaid ''floor'' on a 3/4'' plywood substrate, encase it in Waterlox, and I do believe you'd have yourself a marquetry countertop. Another option - perhaps cheaper - is stenciling on hardwood, of which this is an example. And so is this What else? Beveled glass is readily available, as is chrome countertop edging, and any furniture or auto upholstery shop can cover a panel of 1/8'' plywood in soft butterscotch leather framed in silver studs (maybe not actual silver, but close enough). I don't know exactly what version of Art Deco you are headed for, or if you even like butterscotch, but the point is, you are not doing yet another white kitchen, you're doing something that isn't being done by the mainstream, so the ordinary kitchen sources are not making this stuff. Sure, there is cool Art Deco hardware around, but what passes for ''Art Deco'' kitchen cabinetry in the online catalogs is . . . disappointing. You are going to have to make it, or at least source it, yourself - and I think if you're comfortable outside the painted lines, you can. You'll find yourself hiring a floor guy to work on a countertop, hunting down the local hot rod upholstery shops, telling your cabinet maker to fit bathroom vanity faces to kitchen cabinet boxes - they'll still look at you like you're crazy, but you'll know you're not. Comments (20)After reading the discussion about pink and gray with the baby's bedroom (sorry, can't remember who posted it) -- a color combination I have always loved but haven't been able to use anywhere -- I'm leaning heavily toward painting the walls a straightforward gray and using pink (not baby pink, but a mauvey pink, if that makes sense) towels and well, whatever other accessories I can place in that tiny room. Comments (41)True. I do feel that some have gone overboard in expressing their feelings, to the point of perhaps being inconsiderate of the the feelings of others. I'm the one who initially pointed out that some people are "wired" to be easily perturbed by this sort of thing, but I never read that they had no choice but to get overemphatic at a rare opportunity to express their feelings. (This subject must some psychological connection with the taking-off-shoes-in-the-homes-of-others issue, another one that leads some to get a little carried away.) Note, please, also that that bathroom door is on the other side of the home's central hall--and has its own door. It's very highly unlikely to be a code violation. Energie, I think your initial question was answered, right? :) IMO, the answers on this thread definitely overstate the negatives--to you. As others who've lived with bathroom doors right in the kitchen have said, they don't feel they're a problem worth getting excited over. I agree. If I had one, I'd paper it with red and white flying pigs so people would smile when they saw it....See Morestoveguyy

5 years agoThank you all for your responses! I've attached my latest design, but for reference, here's a description of how it used to be:
The toilet used to be rotated on the adjacent wall, with a sink in front of it. You couldn't get to the toilet or sink unless you stepped around it to close the door first. Nobody ever remembers to close the door when done, and so we have a grand view of the toilet (often left open!) while we're eating at the table.
Next to the toilet are closet doors that open into a laundry room. The doors couldn't open all the way, though, because they hit the toilet. The stacking WD was centered in front of the doors, with a utility sink set up sideways next to it. The sink was rendered useless since we couldn't stand in front of it.

Bump the pantry forward 2 feet, put closet behind it 2 feet. create access THRU planned walkin pantry to laundry, stack the w/d and pocket door between laundry and bath. CLOSE the kitchen/powder room wall. Yes... I forgot to show chase totally closed. You get the idea/ get to both, via the HALLWAY Pocket door the loo from pantry. And you can extend the pantry a bit, perhaps. but four feet not terrible totally shelved.

5 years agoA few things that are making this more challenging:
1. The island is in an awkward spot (can be moved if needed), so I can't extend the pantry out.
2. The laundry needs to stay along the outer walls.

5 years agoOmg. What Jan said. We had to live like this while building our house. Small bunalo with only bath and laundry off kitchen/dining. I would give ip a pantry in a HEARTBEAT to be able to move the bathroom door to the hall where it belongs. No no no no toilet in the kitchen.
This also strikes me as one of those "not everyone is better off with an island " situations. For hundreds, thousands, of years before islands mankind has managed to prepare and consume meals, usually around a family table. It is a beautiful, functional set up!

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I just remodeled the library with the main wall featuring a piano framed by faux built-in bookshelves. So, I'm reluctant to change it again.
Plus, I am working with a low budget, so I'm trying to keep things as simple as possible.
That being said, I just discovered Saniflo, which supposedly would allow me to move the half bath anywhere. Has anyone ever heard of this before? If it turns out I can move the half bath to the hallway where it belongs, here is a preliminary design I came up with (I'd have to figure out the pantry door, though).
