Made it out to the big garden (10 miles south) this afternoon and found the cannas, morning glories, angel trumpet and cypress vine had all been damaged by frost. And tonight's supposed to be as bad, but it doesn't feel as cold to me somehow. Everything on my patio here survived just fine, with towels and sheets draped over the tender ones I left out. My guest room is housing the others. . .

It is likely a tropical hibiscus, Hibiscus rosa sinensis. I have had similar experiences with bringing them in and having them flower into January. I believe the flowering stops then due to the lower light levels indoors. I put mine in my best sunny window. I even tried buying a heavy duty plant light. Nothing made much of a difference. I think that time of year you just have to focus on keeping the foliage healthy and pest-free and wait until summer for blooms. Any time you prune a branch it takes up to three months for that branch to bloom again. If you prune it back when you move it indoors, you will be depriving yourself of flowers that you could have until January. Of course, if it's too big to bring indoors, you may just have to prune somewhat. One good trick is to prune 1/3 of the branches at a time, either scattered throughout the plant or on one side of the plant. A few weeks later, prune 1/3 more, then in a few weeks do the last 1/3. This keeps the plant always making blooms and keeps the size manageable and the shape nice. You'll get occasional yellow leaves, not a big deal unless you have lots of them. It generally means something has changed from the status quo, less or more light or water, higher or lower temperatures, etc.

Hello Palmandan. I bring my palms in for winter here in the UK. I have none planted in the ground as I prefer to grow them in pots as our area is not particularly suited to all year outdoor palm growing...it suits me and the palms! In the g/h at the moment are my seed sown 4yr old CIDP and a store bought Ch Humilis. (I've run out of house room...according to my d/h!) It is heated to the very minimum but gets a lot of light and they seeem to be coping well as new spears are appearing on both. Also in there are a couple of my smaller 1yr old W Robusta palms I grew from seed. They lost most of their leaves to rot as I think they were cold and too wet so succumbed to botrytis. I'm now keeping all these in the g/h drier than normal and are they're not being fed. I have a large Phoenix Dactylifera that sits in a sunny area in the house all year round and seems to grow continually. Also in the house are 3 bigger WR's from the same sowing as the g/h ones that I'm giving extra tlc to in the hope that they will make nice plants. They have each grown a new fan since I bought them in from the g/h before Christmas when we had a particularly lengthy cold spell. The 'housebound' palms are watered regularly as we obviously have the c/h on and they're also being fed weakly. All except the PD went outside for our VERY brief summer last year Gill.
