Summer is over for sure
Comments (7)summer IS over, and around here that means blessed rain. Thunder, and cool rain which we haven't seen for 7 months. Snails the size of golf balls come out and mate on my rock terrace garden slope. The color green becomes a smell, and the ground that I've been working and digging, rocky and dry and not a worm in sight, finally smells like earth. We can put the lightest of blankets over the thin sheet on the bed, and DG will finally agree to sleep without a fan directly blowing right on us. I, too, get the urge to bake and bake. We, however, never get snow. Hail, wind, and the occasional war, but no snow. I'm jealous! Batya...See MorePalm Friendly weather and early summer again?
Comments (16)Looks like mostly 80s in the forecast for the next 10 days. Weds of next week is ALREADY predicted to be in the 90s so its going to be a warm one! I think that its well deserved after the cold spell this past week and a half. Today was very nice, sunny and temps right around 80. Its 72F right now (according to my thermometer its only 67F). Tommorrow 84F. Average high for this time of the year about 77F-80F (about 78F is considered average). Only one more full week in May and then its already June (spring went by pretty quick because now we only have about one month left before summer is offically here!). We still have to warm up a little bit more before its summer, but the humidity is really begining to get to that summer level. Im expecting all my plants including my palms to really start picking up in growth. My hibiscus (which looked like sticks in March and saw a frost in late march) now have some flower buds on it and lots of leaves. With this warm weather they should be starting to open the first batch of flowers. My coconut palm is a little more than half way finished pushing its first outdoor leaf of the year. Im hoping that it begins to get some adult leaves soon and I definitely think its time to step up the pot size (I think its in a 5 gallon pot). Good luck and enjoy some more summer heat! -Alex...See MoreI'm unofficially declaring summer over Friday
Comments (46)We have had some rain and thunder (perhaps more thunder than rain) and it is a lovely 64 degrees with no rain falling here right now. We're headed for a high around 70, so even if no more rain fell at all, it is going to be a really nice day. Our forecast gives us a 100% chance of rain today and a 30% chance tonight, so I'm hopeful. We've been in drought for so many months that it is getting ridiculous, but if we could get 1 or 2 of those big rainfall days like Larry gets, we might finally make it out of drought. That's a really big 'if' though. The storms look good on the radar, but they are patchy and we're apparently in a dry slot right now. Autumn rain that falls between Sept and Nov is our best chance for making it out of drought, so I'm hoping for lots of rain. I was in my back garden killing squash bugs yesterday and, despite having decent rain the last couple of weeks, there's new cracks in the sandy soil back there. By new, I mean they just appeared yesterday......it aggravates me that an area that receives irrigation and that has received probably 13-15" of rain since the beginning of June still is cracking. The grass greened up a little and we have helenium, liatris and goldenrod blooming in the fields, so it looks kinda nice out there right now...if you just ignore the cracks in the ground....See MoreSummer Torte Again! Comments (27)The original NTYimes recipe does not include vanilla. 1983. But in 2016 they published 5 Ways to Adapt Our Famous Plum Torte Recipe I wish more recipes did that. Rather than complain that comments are not the true recipe, they published reader comments for variations. Different seasonal fruits, different flours, less sugar, different sugars. Any pan will do and easily doubled for a sheet pan torte. And different liquors. I'd forgotten about the lemon juice. I appreciate the bumping of this. I'd forgotten where my original recipe came from. That was when i started making mine with cornmeal flour for gluten-free. (family member) Similar recipe using flour was one of the first things i learned to make as a wee child. Easy and fun for a young one to decorate with seasonal fruits. Mother always had fresh fruit at the table and whipped cream or ice cream. Making one tomorrow with plums and rhubarb....See MoreKarin Black Cat
