Help design Home Office in small windowless attic!!
Hi Folks, I have a small attic above my master bedroom that I am looking to convert in to a home office. It doesn't have any window however one of the attic walls faces off to a weirdly located skylight in my bedroom. Pics attached to show what I mean. I'm looking to install a 5'x4' picture window with frosting so I get some light into the attic. Is this going to look ok? Its quite an unusual layout but its a decent sized room that I need to make use of. Also, I have painted the attic recently with BM Owl Gray.
Please help with some ideas for an attic with a modern look! Thanks!!

Comments (2)These situations usually still bleed a lot of hot air into the attic, even with weatherstripping. Something I did was to build a 'storm door.' In the attic,I build a frame up about 5" and placed a piece of wood on that, hinged to the frame. Comments (24)The way I see it, the blank wall has one possibility and that is as a backdrop for a proportionately sized planting arrangement. The most likely possibility of plants that fit would be an arrangement of 3 small, multi-trunk trees (12' height ... made of what would otherwise be known as large shrubs) where two are at the back row (a few feet from the wall) and the third is centered between and in front of them, as a 'front row.' They would be limbed up to half their total height and sitting in a bed of groundcover that is substantial in size. In fact, the bed would also encompass the existing tree. If you'd imagine a 12' circular bed with the existing tree centered in it, that would be a major part of the bed. Then, in line with that same tree, extend the front edge of the bed straight over to the drive and parallel to the house front wall, fine tuning the details as to what makes sense. (Thus, the front-to-back depth of the bed would be roughly equal to the same distance that the tree is in front of the house, where that measurement is made 90* from the house facade.) The multi-trunk trees would be spaced such that the the width of their finished form fits comfortably within the confines of the brick wall width, excluding the entrance area. It seems that an effort is being made to obscure the entrance door. I think this is opposite of what the goal should be. I'd remove whatever screen is in front of it and widen the drive with an abutting walk that goes directly to the entrance area. Comments (7)it will be more of a full-time office, but he travels a lot & visits clients frequently working out of their office What I like about Beverly's last suggestion with the worktop extended along the wall is that also gives your husband more storage for things like files, etc. Without something like that, will he have enough storage in the room? Otherwise I would strongly consider a credenza for storing files, under the TV, rather than a media console. 5 years agoIdeally if you can go straight across back wall. But the window may be too low to sit comfortably.
Or make the private corner a desk with a diagonal cabinet above. The area to right for printer, countertop stuff.

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoSo it's tough to bring any large pieces of furniture (tall bookshelves etc), up the spiral staircase. I'm going to have to focus on smaller decor and furniture items. Also, I was hoping to add a mural on the back wall to add some drama. Thoughts?

H: 7.5ft in center, 75” at corner
I: 5ft
Overall room-
Height: 75”
Length: 14.5 ft
Width: 14ft
There are 5 outlets in this space almost every wall has one or two. I would prefer having a desk, some book shelves and some art on floating shelves etc. I’m looking at Wayfair/IKEA for stuff.
There are cabinets all across the back wall so I have a ton of storage for stuff already. I painted those cabinets white too along with the trim.

5 years agoBefore purchasing any furniture, figure out the rooms needed uses & best furniture placement to get most function.
Make a list of measured use areas, then get items. Get extra decor after placement configured.
