Tiny Bathroom Dilemma

Suggestions for this tiny bathroom wall. I just put a faux cement finish over my old bathroom tile in my bathroom. Ignore the water stain around the shower handle. There was a leak that has been fixed and the cement finish will dry perfectly. As you can see, the faux cement wall extends about 8 inches past the bathtub because the tile below it extended the same amount. I didn't bother removing the tiles that extended past the tub but I'm thinkint I probably should have. Before I start busting out tile though, I thought I'd post pics here and see if anybody has any other ideas for this poor sad wall.

If you’re concerned about the assymetry, the easiest fix would be to paint the wall behind the toilet the same color as the cement treatment. Then place a framed print over the toilet.

Another idea is to just place to pictures one above the other over the toilet.

I have a small house. Small baths. You don't like housecleaning nor wiping down after kids. One thing I did was I got rid of the ceramic tile tub surround and had white swanstone panels installed. I never want to clean mildewed grout again. I love tile and put it above the panels. Yes, I prefer, way prefer the look of tile but not at the cost of cleaning it. The swanstone looks pretty good. Sorry no pics. I have two Americast tubs and I think they are acrylic..I love them. Had cast iron before. They are shiny, sparkly, fresh and white. I think my cleaners use a spray to clean them. I am glad you are thinking this thru before you do extreme drastic measures. 1000s f is not going to be better with the addition of windows. Editing, building up, and up going storage will help, not windows. Natural light is overrated. Look at small space solutions and not at glam or cliched luxury sites. We built closets onto our bedroom walls instead of new dressers. Up to the ceiling. Think California closets. With drawers and cabinets. Not pretty but functional. We have ikea Brimnes headboards with under bed storage drawers in our new house. I am an ikea slave. Your family is always going to take a lot of time and energy and that's just the way it is. A 1000sf house will not be easy but it's home. And I love love your kitchen. Think about the life you live for now. Think first before acting.

Totally get the frustration! Both our bathrooms are small and we had a lot of "where do we hang the towel' dilemmas too, especially as we have a pocket door in our main bathroom so can't put things on the back of it. We ended up with a small towel bar mounted over the vanity on an adjacent wall, and a heated towel rack on the one free wall so that we could hang multiple towels vertically and folded and they would actually dry. We almost had a TP holder mounting crisis and the place we've had to mount it is strictly much closer to the toilet than is recommended, but it looks and feels fine. A folded towel right on top of the toilet isn't super appealing, but a nice shelf above the toilet with a folded towel on it might work? My parents have two tiers of towel bars (not hooks) on the back of their bathroom door. which is in fact pretty functional. Annoying you can't get a robe hook in beside the shower!

That is not large enough to serve as an accessible bath. It is also not built to be an indoor space. It needs a correct full foundation below the frost line, new framing, code required insulation, all new electrical, all new plumbing, etc. It needs to be a full addition, in other words.

That’s an ideal spot for one of those train racks. Normally I wouldn’t put towels above a toilet, but in a small space you do what you need to do. Looks like you keep the lid down. Lol.

Thank y'all. my concern is the assymetry of the concrete on the wall and the off-centeredness of the toilet. Should I leave it as is or remove the portion that extends beyond the tub?

I like the paint idea but I would do it so it wraps the corner on the right and leave a stripe of white wall where the toilet is so now it looks centered...then hang a few pictures....

Leave it as it is. You don't need symmetry in this situation. What you propose will look odd.

I agree that it is odd looking with the asymmetry, and also agree that painting will adequately address it. Removing the tiles now will be a lot of work since it will leave rough edges and surfaces that will take some fiddling with to restore.

Great ideas! I definitely like the idea of not removing the tiles at this point as it will be a challenge to get the edges right as mentioned by Kudzu. My issue with painting the wall gray is that matching the gray could be difficult (there are so many different shades in the faux cement) and that could look odd. Also, I really wasn't wanting that much gray in such a small space. I was however thinking about adding some horizontal wood slats or tongue and groove behind the toilet and overlapping the 8" worth of cement that extends beyond the tub. The problem with this is that the cement tub wall and the sheetrock wall behind the toilet aren't flush due to the cement wall having tile beneath it, so I'd say there's about a 1/2" difference between the faux cement wall and the sheetrock wall. Additionally, I don't know how I'd attach the wood slats (or tongue and groove) to the faux cement. Any ideas on how to get around this? I really like the idea of stained wood to warm up the cement.

I guess I'm weird but I rather like the asymmetry.

To offset it I might hang a hanging plant or a triangular piece of art. (Upside down triangle, not a right angle one). Or fill in with floating shelves of different lengths, longer lengths at top, smaller at bottom (creating a triangle). Or find a sculptural piece that has curves. Maybe something curvy/organic shaped in metal that protrudes so you could hang towels on it, or toiletry bags, or extra toilet paper. Have fun with the asymmetry, offset it with more organic shape.

Or just go with it and hang a couple of paintings or a painting that is centered in the painted wall section, totally oblivious to the toilet below it. We are always trying to draw attention away from the toilet, so don't feel compelled to line everything up nice and neat with it. This would draw the eye up.

I think also if you change out the shower curtain to one that is closer to the cement tile color it wouldn't be as noticeable. As it is less noticeable in the 2nd pic. But who doesn't love a nice fresh white shower curtain?

Heck you could also paint the bathroom door black to match the knob. Assuming you keep this door often a lot. We always keep our bathroom doors closed.

I wouldn't even try to overlap the wood slats...It can be done but you will have to either add some flat wood strips to the wall to make up the difference in the depth and then attach the slats to that - make sure to do a really good job with some sealer on the ends by the shower and caulk it in... The asymmetry doesn't necessarily bother me either... You may want to just try decorating a bit and see how that feels... Add a couple of floating shelves or baskets to the wall and put a garbage on the right side of the toilet...
