I'm guilty... asiatic jasmin at base of my oak tree

I like the look of bark even more than the sight of the ground cover/vine growing up the trunk, so for years I have kept the long, climbing plant trimmed down... and felt smugly pleased with myself for not letting the plant take over the tree.

It was only today, after grabbing a handful of the matted vines at the base of the trunk and seeing how damp the trunk was, that I woke up. It would serve me right if I were to lose this oak. And the other oak I have similarly treated. Tomorrow: radical clearing work!
