We hung our vanity lights beside the mirror, because side lighting is supposed to be better. We have a sconce on each side of the individual medicine cabinets and one in between. The lights face down and have a satin glass shade. I was concerned that the shades would make the light too dim, but it just softens it. I believe they are made for a 75 watt bulb, but we are using a 60 watt in each which is plenty of light. We have had the overhead ones before and find there is more glare and shadows. There is also a rule of thumb about the height you install the lights that is based on the tallest one using the mirror. I can't remember what it is, but would think someone on the design forum would know. Good luck on your choices.

I wish I understood when you said: "An alternative is to run high output LEDs on-top of a normal cornice system offset slightly.". We will call Nuworld tomorrow too to see if they have a comparable product like the lighting company from Turkey. Our light plan shows 3 regular ceiling fixtures. The ones in front of the window could be up and down casting pendants. The ones over the sink and big one over the island I assume task down lights. I can't see I would be bothered by inconsistent cove light shadows. I think the idea is worth exploring carefully, especially considering we won't be able to have under cab lighting and given the lower ceilings limit up light fixtures. From what I understand cove lighting is a very good way to get ambient/general room lighting. Carol

The UV makers show tiny air borne germs that fly through the air stream of your home. The germs as long as they don't find a nutrient rich place to land often die and become dust. The dust particles in the air along with any germs are microscopic small and over time make their way into your HVAC system through the filter. No filter will stop everything. Some proclaim 99.9% whether it's actually that much who knows. You would have to know how much makes it thru before hand. Every home is different in the amount of dust due to traffic, infiltration, pets, smokers and the list goes on. So if the germs (bacteria and such) and some dust make it to the wet dark location of the indoor coil they have all they need for growth to occur. UV bulbs are primarily built around the notion of what can or can't grow in sunlight. Problem is there are a lot of nooks and crannies within the realm of your HVAC system. Molds outdoors often grow on the north side of structures, trees and so on. Because these areas escape the wrath of the sun's UV rays. Due to this problem, the UV rays of a bulb may not be 100% effective. On the production of Ozone... even the sun can produce ozone, given the right set of circumstances. It appears that certain manufacturer's are no longer listing if a bulb produces ozone or not. Ozone creation is a valid concern in my opinion... so this is a very grey area when it comes to these types of devices.

For mad_gallica, we can get up to 4 feet of snow, but it's rare. More likely we'll get 4-8 in. during a moderate storm. For "Beyond..." the color temperatures look ok: the Hinkley comes in at 2700, so on the dim side. The Garden Light comes in several color temps: 2700 and others. Yardvaark: good point about brightness. I believe that will be "lumens". The Hinkley is 350 lumens on 4 watts. The Garden Light is 230 lumens at 2 watts. However, I doubt it's an apples-to-apples comparison because one is a strip and the other a bulb. One advantage of the Hinkley is that presumably new bulbs could be inserted, even different kinds of bulbs. However, it's most likely the Garden Light is sealed and so no maintenance could be done. We want subtle and understated with outdoor lighting; when one gets a quote the lighting people could suggest crazy numbers of lights - would look like a Xmas display! We got one quote last week for 46 lights. We let the designer plan it as he wished, without saying much and he came up with that number. Yes, hard to test and get a feel for outdoor lighting. Maybe I should create a simulator and a person could upload their landscape picture and then place different outdoor fixtures for a given sky darkness? Another project...ha ha.
