show me your Pottery Barn 'style' family room
Comments (4)I did our second home (condo) in a Pottery Barn style and think I can honestly say, I bought nothing from them! Not that I dont love PB...I do and buy there often! But being in a big city, I have many other choices. From The Dump (a furniture store here) I bought a black entertainment center for a flat screen, with side shelves and bottom cabinets ($700) for all three pieces plus the bridge shelf, a leather sofa and chair (under $1000 for both), a bar height table and 6 chairs ($500), and a large area rug w/Fall colors, geometric pattern. Remember Storehouse Furniture? They all went out of business and I found an outlet here that was GIVING it away practically. I got a huge wooden coffee table w/8 small drawers on both sides ($200!...reg. $800), and a bar cabinet for ($250...reg. $750!) For the entry, I had a wrought iron table made at an iron works place nearby and had them add a dark marble top to it($175)...found a huge wood-framed mirror for $30 when Bombay was going out of business. The rest came from garage and estate sales and extra furniture from our house here. My only splurge was two upholstered chairs that I special ordered with a striped fabric. Found a cute document style chest at Marshalls for $50 to go between them. I really bargained shopped when decorating this place, and since I got great deals, I didn't feel guilty when I couldnt find something in a cheaper version...just went ahead and bought the pricier one, like the lamp on the $50 table that I paid WAY too much for. I guess my point is that many makers are now trying to duplicate that easy, clean, casual look and if you have a certain look in mind, then scour the landscape looking. Marshalls, TJMaxx (Homegoods), Tues. Morning, Ross, Home Decorators Catalog, Target, Kohls,....all had options for me. I hope you find what you're looking for!...See MoreRug Advice / Family Room Progress
Comments (22)AnnieDeighnaugh - that is a fantastic idea. If your other thread has construction details, could you possibly link to it? Thanks for the design seeds palette, these are fun and useful. In this case, I was able to eliminate two colors fairly quickly: the dark grey and tan. I like the silver in the Phoebe Howard room (I think the sofa fabric will give a similar effect), the white, but think I want more contrast than the light brown. mlweaving_Marji - The sofas are by Hickory White (left) and Sherril Furniture (right). The Sherrill one model # is 2186 1/2. I don't remember if there's a loveseat in that model but there are many loveseats to select. mtnrdredux - Keep after me please! I do want some zing in here. Orange built-ins?! I have the fun lights ... we wired for sconces over DH's sofa (not sure about what we're putting over mine yet, probably floor lamps) and also want something really nice and dark for contrast. TV (sigh) will help, perhaps the brown tile, or a combination of a dark reclaimed wood mantel and a great tile. Here's one I found on Filmore Clark recently: I actually rather like the idea of the tile with a really dark brown mantel: Thanks all for hanging in there with me. It makes it so much more fun!...See MoreWHAT FABRIC & COLOR SECTIONAL SOFA FOR THIS RENTAL HOME FAMILY ROOM?
Comments (13)Thanks for the great tips. Yes, it's a good point that 16 won't be sitting at the same time...more like 12 or so. Sadly, I have to go fairly dark due to the cleaning and staining issues. I should have added that I plan to add a large 12 x 15 area rug to break up the dark sofas from the darkish wood. I can't go with medium gray because it will look too "matchy-matchy" with the med. gray stone fireplace. Quick question/concern...I searched for sofas that are made from "Sunbrella" people here suggested and there are only a few and they are outdoor sofas. Mostly, the Sunbrella fabric is pillows. Also, I'll be removing both sofa tables behind the sofas that are there now, so that will give me another~ 4+ feet. But I still plan on putting more narrow sofa tables as I don't want the sofas right up against the walls, so it will be more like an extra 2 feet I'll be gaining. Any other suggestions for a "tough" fabric that won't be torn easily? We've had issues with guests sitting on the sofas, etc., with keys, etc, in their back pockets that tear the fabric or snag it. What are opinions on leather? Vinyl? Also, I'd like to lighten up the room with a cleaner, more modern white (ish) paint, maybe with a touch of gray, )but not with any blue or "pink" in it.) The walls are now painted Sherwin-Williams "Accessible Beige" and the Doors (not seen in the pictures are "Dovetail"...which I LOVE, but is way too dark for the walls. I've already gone down the line of the "Dovetail" paint strip and the lighter colors look kinda "pink-ish" in that room.) Thanks again everyone...See More**Need advice on paint color for family room**
Comments (4)the current color isn't all that bad. a warmer white with a slight greenish undertone would work. Or, look at SW Sea Salt. or similar pale sage color, which would be nice w/the maple. then I'd bring in some blacks and off whites for accents. You really need something of interest around those cabs. black and white artwork? hanging macrame? plants? pottery? also, some type of artwork or larger photo over the sofa would look nice (but I'd rotate the sconces so they are vertical a simple gallery wall done above the cabs might be nice. examples:...See MoreLisa
