Bump out with this?

I want to bump out with this range. 27" deep with two 8 in. cabinets on either side at same depth...then the rest of base cabinets continue at 24" counter depth. Can this be done?

Have a sit down with your cabinet maker/designer.

joelcoqui made a good point in that the front of the Bosch is not typical. That Bosch is made for a standard depth cabinet & overlaps the edges. If you bump out, you will have to fill behind the Bosch. The Bosch will not "flush up" with the front of cabinets due to its design IMHO.

A bump out to match the range is definitely an option. The exact dimensions you mentioned may require a custom cabinet size depending on which manufacturer you are using. It will also require a custom countertop to match which will increase your cost.

drtom77, Wolf recommends 36" for max height, so you should be fine. Are you measuring from the top of the rangetop grates? Here's my situation: I have a Wolf rangetop, interior wall, 36" tall counters, and I'm 5'11" tall. Ventilation is a Broan Elite 1200 cfm external roof mounted blower, 10" duct, a long run with 2 -90 degree turns and an angle. My arched wood hood is 34 1/2" above the rangetop grates at the center of the arch(gives 2" clearance for my head). My liner/insert is recessed inside it at 38 1/2" above the rangetop grates. Too high IMO! My hood operates by a variable speed knob. The lowest setting is worthless. Medium is great for most jobs and high effective for very smokey or grease spattering stuff. There are no lingering smells in my kitchen and operation is quiet. I wouldn't lower the hood and bump my head, but I'd stay at the 36" max height. Also if you do have to run your hood at a tad higher speed for effectiveness, the operation should be quiet with your in-line blower. Just my opinion. Hope it helps!

cali59, I agree regarding the comment that bump outs aren't out of style if you like them... I will always go with what I like, not what others consider are on trend or passe. I did use a kitchen with a bumped out sink for a couple months, and found the bump-out to be something I bumped into! I do think your DW should go beside the sink cabinet - for me and most, that's a must. Much easier. Dishes and glasses in drawers is how we have ours arranged (either beside the DW on the other side, or across from it to pivot and put away), and in the new reno layout as well. The exception are our extra glasses located above the DW - and that will change as I have to close the DW to get the glasses in the upper. Too many steps to put away glasses! Regarding deeper counters... yes, they are more costly, but we are going that route, with deeper drawers and deeper upper cabinets throughout except our island (not enough room). More counter space is always a good thing for me. Adding even 2" to drawer depths is a bonus for me as well. To be clear, it might seem to be an obstacle to have your dishes and glasses in a drawer cabinet beside the DW, but I stand in front of the open dishwasher, drawers as needed open, and easily put my dishes/glasses away. Glasses in a drawer are not a problem.

My greater discomfort is that my existing full size fridge on the other side of the kitchen is going to stick out until we can afford a counter depth version in a year or two. That's where you might want to bump out the base cabinets (if possible). Deeper countertops are great but will be more expensive. If that wall is a straight run of cabinets (no corners), bumping out the base cabinets would be easy to do with the bonus of not having to replace the refrigerator.

Design a galley kitchen with peninsula. As is probably the current design. Normal home appreciation only puts money in your pocket when you sell. Remodels take money out of your pocket. You will get no additional bump from a bump. It would actually lose you money, because it is not very appealing inside or out.

You can bump out more than 3 inches if you want. Bump out enough and your cooktop becomes accessible by two cooks from the sides. You can still use the oven from the front while someone cooks. . . . .Another alternative is to space your cabinets 3" out from the back wall and increase the counter depth to 27 or 28 inches. The added depth is very useful.

Most ranges require that their doors project beyond the cabinet fronts. That's due to the fire hazard issue. Almost all ranges can be bumped out with adjacent cabinetry, but they will not have the doors at the same plane as the cabinets. They aren't designed to. And you will have the additional complexity and expense of the countertop now required behind the range, and pulling the range hood forward with a stainless spacer.

It's a lot of customization and expense for a look that is not done very much at all anymore. The Transitional trend simplified the kitchen decorative bits, and now Transitional is moving even further towards Modern. A bumpout would not be part of either type of design. Even traditional kitchens are seldom seen with a bump out these days.

I don't understand because now the ovens are made so that the door is flush with the cabinetry for the European linear look. Why isn't that a fire hazard? I actually wish just the front door of the range would stick out. I can't tell from the specs if this is what I am going to get. Maybe I won't bump out after all because it seems so complicated between adding counter in the back and additional countertop pricing

What are you trying to achieve with the bump-out — is it strictly for looks or some other reason? To answer your exact question, yes, it can be done.

I love the look. I regret that I did not set mine up better. MIne is not bumped out but if we had the funds we would do a change order and do the cabinets around the range to come out. Heck we would have gotten a different range too.

I say go for it, if you can make it work and you love it.

I know it can be done but its the range I am picking out. It may look like a double bump out. Here is a pic of the range in the showroom display so you can see what I mean.

yes, that Bosch detail will keep the unit face pushed out from the cabinet face.

There are darn few ranges that are designed to be flush with cabinets. None of them cheap. Bumping out cabinets in violation of the installation instructions IS a fire hazard. If you want a range flush with the cabinets, triple your budget to start.

You would suggest not bumping out then? Jeffrey R. Grenz, General Contractor ? If I purchased 2 seperate pieces top and wall oven, it would be more flush with base cabs, then I can do it. Only negative is that the oven will be approx. 3" lower to floor which is a negative (can you tell by specs if that is true?). The price for the 2 is about $500 more which is not my issue.

Was discussed. Im set. Too much indecision and doubts with this model I am picking out... so NO bump out.
