Laundry Room Design Dilemma Basements

HELP me with my laundry room design!

Hi! Welcome to my dungeon! AKA my basement where the laundry room is! We get water down here so we are about to do a major renovation to clean it up and dry it up and we plan to paint all the walls white and put in some canister lights but not Finish the basement per se... SO - here's my question:

I want to create a more inviting and functional laundry room wall here... Any help is appreciated! and please excuse the horrid state of everything! THANKS!

Personally, I require a sorting area. Baskets on a shelf works well.

When my laundry was in the basement, I LOVED having a laundry chute. Do you have one?

Think about how you'd like to use your laundry room. Looking at your room, this would be my wish list:
- handy storage for laundry supplies. Your existing cupboards aren't handy. If they were, bottles wouldn't be on top of the laundry machines.
- a mop/broom rack (if you're feeling rich, you could add a mop sink as well-- it's on the floor which makes it convenient for mops and pails... and washing dogs)
- a clean, clear and convenient folding area. This could be on top of the laundry machines, if you installed a piece of countertop over them. Or it could be a table or re-used kitchen cabinet lowers (Craigslist is your friend). What it isn't is a washer and dryer with space between and behind them for clothes to fall into.
- a floor drain-- makes life a lot easier in the event of flooding.
- a counter beside the laundry tubs
- a rod for hanging wet things to drip dry over the laundry tubs
- a shelf above the rod for things you want close to hand
- if your laundry bins live down here, a designated space for them
Note that none of the above mentions décor. The pretties come last. If you post a floor plan with dimensions we can help you with a functional layout. Then we can talk paint, lights, tile, etc.

You'd probably want to leave an inch on either side of the pair and an inch between them just to be on the safe side. The standard model they give me on the layout program is 30" wide, so with those dimensions side by side is a no go. With your dimensions and adding the 3" of wiggle room, that would put you right up against the 24" deep countertop running under the windows. So it could be done, but you are pretty much locked in to that size washer and dryer from then on. I like the idea of putting the rack in the pantry style closet--that's what my mom does with hers. Another thought is to do pullout hampers. We are doing 3 sets of them. They are actually tall trash pullouts, but they will allow the kids to go ahead and sort their clothes when they bring them in to the laundry room & I can just load them in the washer. I like the idea of the shelves for the clean clothes baskets too. We did the corner sink and it looks great. We used a single basin stainless undermount large D-shaped sink. You would not believe the space in there and I don't have to worry about it staining or yellowing or cracking like alot of the "laundry sinks" out there. I've attached an 'under construction" pic for you of our countertop & sink. I don't have time right now, but I'll work on some elevations for you with some additional ideas.

Thanks everyone. @decoenthusiaste, the fridge is mostly for extra sodas, milk, overflow. We used to have it in the garage which wasn't the "cleanest" area either but its primary purpose is storage. @cd7733 Which way would you swing the door? In the other direction. Or out of the room all together? And yes the door is 32" wide but with the frame/trim it is 40". My house is really old ; ) @mer03 no we can't. There is no other way to access it. I did look at building something like this over it but more for storage. I have never folded clothes in the laundry room anyways. Just out the door is a large island I could always fold on.

The best solution would be to measure how much higher the washer and dryer need to be to cover the “offending” connections. Then, build your own drawer or laundry basket shelf unit to the correct specifications. Most drawers come in standard heights. And that might not be enough “lift” for you to cover these connections. But, in the end, you will have something that works for you. Option two would be to remove the cabinet above the washer and stack the dryer on top of the washer. It would cover the water connections and the power cord, but the dryer cord and plug would still be visible. That could be moved or a folding counter and hanging space could be built to the right of your washer/dryer to mask it. Good luck! (With a newborn...you will be spending a lot of time in that room!)

@ffpalms so funny that you posted this. I have actually considered painting the beadboard dark like that. All our the doors and windows in our house are painted the dark brown/bronze color you see in the first photo (you can see part of the laudry door). With the ceilings being 9 feet and the beadboard going up to six feet, do you think it would be too dark to do this? I suppose I could reduce the height of the beadboard but I do like when it's tall. What do you think? Thanks so much for your thoughts!!

Add a wood closet rod or towel racks mounted to the underside of the cabinets over the sink. They're for stuff that needs to drip or dry, even paint brushes can be clipped to hanging clothes pins.

Add a row of hooks for the mops.

Add a remnant of sheet vinyl flooring under the sink extending to the washer and dryer area. Easy to sweep, easy to wash, easy to find things when they drop on the floor.

Throw the window curtains in the wash with some bleach.

For paint color, just prime the area with white primer, then finalize your choice of white.

Add a mirror or large poster for fun.
