What is this, and will it spread to my roses?

I have a few hellebores growing in the shade near my Annie Laurie McDowell rose from Ingrid. Yesterday, I saw what I initially thought was clumps of fur from Sebastian clinging to the undersides of several leaves from one stalk of one of the hellebores. Sebastian is my Himalayan cat, and his long hair is exactly this color. I do sometimes find his fur on a low growing rose, he’s brushed up against, but that’s from the rose thorns. I’ve never seen anything like this. I did have some whitefly on an iris across the yard, recently. That was also a first for me. I’m being overrun with nasty insects lately, mostly small caterpillars. Could this be mealybugs? Scale? Whitefly? After looking online, I‘m leaning towards either mealybugs or whitefly, but all that fuzz is really throwing me off. Photos to follow in a comment. Thanks, Lisa
