Please help me choose rug for foyer - size, style, new or used?
Comments (11)Thanks, prairiedawn. My style actually is more of a rustic/modern country style rather than traditional, although I have a mix of everything! I used BM Baby Turtle in the powder room and laundry room, which are adjacent to the foyer, SW Artifact in the great room, which is just beyond the foyer, and SW Believable Buff and Camelback throughout the rest of the house. roseabby, I spoke to the salesman at Macys and he also mentioned a 2'6" runner may be out of scale. The problem is I do NOT want to cover up most of the wood flooring. Would a smaller area rug placed horizontally across the front doors, rather than a larger run placed vertically in the room, look strange? The two doors are 6' wide and the entire wood entry is approx. 10' wide....See Moreneed help with rug color, style and arm chairs for dining room
Comments (9)I like to create an elegant yet comfortable dining room settings. I have a curier with displays, that will stay. The six chairs will be side chairs and I need two arm or no-arm chairs at each end. My idea of the rug is 9'x12' since the room is 12'x15'. I am not sure if the rug color is to match the light gray wall or to match the chairs. The table is maghogny color....See MoreRug size or no rug?
Comments (33)Hi Lydia- I don't know where you live. Many cities have shops to purchase the real thing. But before you even think about buying anything, please educate yourself. You can do it online, or you can read it in books. Read about the carpets, how they are made, what they look like, what they should look like, and what are the signs of quality, what are the signs of a machine-made rug vs a hand made rug. Then after you have studies, then go into the shops, and don't bring any money or credit cards. For real!!! With everything in your brain, and your hands very clean, look at the rugs, and think about their quality, what is awesome, great, good, and what you wouldn't wrap a body in cause it's a cheap machine-made copy. When the salesman comes over to you, be very polite and say, Oh, I am not buying right now, I will at some time in the future. Right now, I need to educate myself all about these wonderful carpets. I suggest you do this at a time when the store isn't very busy. This way, the salesman can actually give you some time, and if you are lucky he is a nice person and will want to share some of his knowledge with you, and you can learn a lot that way. Do this at every carpet store in every city that is a reasonable driving distance from you. If this seems like a lot of work, well it is a bit of work. Think of it as learning how to buy a diamond and shopping for one Years ago, a Persian hand-knotted carpet often cost more than many people's engagement rings, too. No more, thanks to the vagaries of politics and import tariffs and embargos, etc. Don't think of it as work, think of it as an art lesson. Decorative arts, to be precise. Do you have any friends that are Persian or Turkish that can shop with you? They know rugs like Americans know baseball....See MoreEntry hallway runner - what size/style would fit best?
Comments (3)Thanks, Jan! I just snapped a couple additional photos showing the area at the front entry in relation to the front hallway where the runner is + a length shot of the runner. I measured from the door to the wall where the hallway starts and it’s 72 in. The length of the door across (not counting the molding on the sides) is 36 in. exactly. And the widest I could probably go without interfering with the air vent is 48 in. But i’m afraid to get one too big so that its too close to the hallway runner. shouldn’t there be some space? what’s the recommendation there? I also measured the width of the hallway and it’s 43.5 in. Given those measurements, do you have a suggestion on which entry rug and runner sizes would work best? Thank you!...See MoreB L
