I want to make my own...somehow...
Comments (21)Hiya Barefootin I love crochet and well some thoughts cross my mind. Any place that does welding can make a metal frame for ya at a small cost. They will make whatever size metal circle ya want really. And the crochet thing well they sell very big hooks and ya can even crochet with macrame cord. I personally ouold start at the ring and work in decreasing so that the most strength is at the ring. I was also thinking that recycling the leftover grocery plastic bags is all the age so I would use both the macrame cord and the plastic bags!!! Lots of help and advise atour crochet group at MSN we are Happy Hookers crocheters Paradise come and join and ask away. Comments (34)Q. Why can't compost be used indoors? A. Because. There IS actually a very good and well documented reason why compost is not recommended as a major additive to container potting soil, either for indoor plants or outdoor plants. And that is how it affects good drainage, a quality that is pretty much paramount for any sort of container growing. Compost continues to breakdown even as a component of potting soil. The longer it goes, the more frequently wetted and the warmer the container is kept, the faster the material breaks down. And when that happens, the individual particles become tinier and more uniform in size, the pore spaces (the empty cavities between particles) shrink and the whole mix compresses. Compression and lack of pore space has a big negative impact on drainage and soggy soil and rotten roots tend to be a result. That's why most high quality purchased potting soils contain minimal - if any - concentrations of compost. It just doesn't hold up. If you are growing in containers short term, like very seasonal crops, compost can work as an additive (not the base) to potting soil. But for long term success - growing anything longer than 6 months - you want a durable, barky, textural potting medium that is not going to collapse and impact good drainage. The Container Gardening forum has a detailed discussion on this very subject that is the longest running (march '05) thread on GW. More than 2500 posts have entered into the discussion and the knowledge base is pretty high - in fact, the original author is considered an expert on container soils and container gardening in general Here is a link that might be useful: Container Soils - Water Movement and Retention...See Morewanting advice on making my own compost soil
Comments (1)Sounds like your manure pile is 'old' and therefore completely composted. Not sure about the others. Fresh chicken poo for example, can burn plants with too much N. All these ingredients would be good after composting, just make sure you get both greens and browns in the pile. Assuming the manure/soil pile is the only one that's well aged, I would spread that where you want to garden and till it in. Start small or buy some extra compost if you don't have at least an inch or two on the ground. This fall, you'll have compost made during the summer, so layer on or dig that in. Things will improve each year....See MoreI want to hold my own craft fair ..help !
Comments (8)A few years ago, a small group of artisans from our area decided to start a yearly event called the Prospect Road Craft Crawl. This event is held in late October (for the Holiday gift buying rush) and has grown so much it's amazing. Last year over 40 homes were involved with 72 artisans along a 25+ mile stretch (rural area). Some artisans get together and there can be up to 3 featuring their works in one home. All contribute a nominal $10.00 fee which is used for nicely made road signs, pamphlets, etc. The homes are open from 10 am to 5 pm Saturday and Sunday. Advertising costs are kept to a minimum by asking local gas stations and stores to distribute the pamphlets and advertise on their reader boards starting a month ahead of time. I've been looking into joining the Crawl. From all indications it is a great pay day for the folks featuring their art. We are located just 20 minutes from the city and a lot of people come to the area just for the Crawl that weekend. Maybe you can pick up some ideas from what I'm writing here - hopefully so. Remember that word of mouth is the biggest seller, so once you set your plan in action, start talking!!!...See Moreraee_gw zone 5b-6a Ohio
