I suggest a much larger rug so the sofas can be on it. Like this:

There are a few things you may want to think about changing to carry off the mid-century vibe…one is the chandelier and the other is the white iron railing. You could paint it black?

I understand about the rug…go for it, a suggestion: look for one with navy accents instead of black. Both of these are found at overstock.com

Please purchase two coffee tables, one for each sofa and chair. You want the table to be easily reached by those seating on sofas and chairs. You have just the bones of your room at this point. Add color through drapes, throw pillows, one glorious rug (not white) with pattern and color. If you are not sure what you like, look and see: research web sites, magazines : think about what you like and why...What you have to date is good looking; do your research and then trust your instincts.

Thank you JudyG and threers. I agree, two coffee tables. After measuring the room again today, I think that makes the most sense. As for the rug, I just can't get into the modern, bold rugs that I've seen. Just seems like 'too much' but maybe I just haven't found the right one. I think that's why I am considering the Flokati style as I see them on a lot of websites with sofas like mine. Maybe a Flokati rug with a pattern in it? Like the ones with lines. I've attached a photo here.

Anybody like this option?

i know the 2 chairs i am using are not true to the beauty of the velvets you have, but their color does not show as well in the pics as these do. i assume you will get samples to confirm it will work. what i like about the top rug is the lack of exactness, it allows you to play with many other things.

JudyG we are absolutely painting those railings! Can't wait to do that, as I find the white railing so annoying.

At this point I am still torn regarding the rug. I've seen some interesting options posted here (thank you!) and I guess we just have to keep searching. I won't buy the fluffy Flokati after all, unless I can find one with some blue in it. That one you posted is really nice.

Otto15....your room looks a little like a "waiting room". You need some end tables, lamps, plants, pillows....some pretties to make it homey. Some drapes also. Since I cannot see what is behind the one couch....could you arrange your couches into an "L" shape with the chairs facing them with a table between? After you get the new rug, you will be able to tell what more you need to make your room like you want it. Mid Century modern can look very nice. With your room like it is, I am not sold on the 2 coffee tables....I think one near one of the couches and then put end tables on each end of the other couch would look better. IMO Or you could bring your couches closer together and get one big square coffee table to be used by both couches.

Leggy seating pieces always look better when entirely on the rug, IMO. That means a much bigger rug.

erinsean, I am intrigued by your suggestion of moving the sofas. We worked with a designer initially on this, just to decide on which sofas and chairs to buy. But since we worked through Havenly online, the scope of the project was limited. She suggested rugs that I did not like. I love the sofas and chairs though., and several tables that we are considering - most from West Elm. We are literally on step one here. There's so much more to add, such as tables, etc. She suggested setting it up with two separate tables (with layout as you see it now). But I'm going to ask my hubby to move things around and let's see how it looks with the two sofas next to each other. BTW - which direction would you face them (the two sofas). Would they 'open up' toward the front windows or would you have them face the back of the house - toward our dining room?

Re window treatments: I posed the question to this discussion board a while back. Most people felt that our ceiling high was just too high and it would look awkward having drapes that are so much lower than the ceiling. Some even suggested leaving the windows alone. I think we are going with a motorized solar shade, just for privacy. It will also give the windows a little more 'finished' look. But the general consensus was no drapes.

One more thing. All the rug suggestions are great. But I can't seem to find one that is larger than 8x10. We need at least 9x12 or better yet 10x14.

Love your sofas and chairs, and the colors are just marvelous!

You can keep your configuration as is. or rearrange to have the sofas perpendicular and the two chairs next to each other facing one of the sofas.

With the latter arrangement you would only need one large coffee table, and the end tables.

For a coffee table you can do a proper table or a large ottoman with a great tray on it that you can serve on.

The advantage of n ottoman is that you can put your feet up, and you can serve on the tray, too.

Or you can have a table if you prefer.

If you do a square coffee table, I would do circular end tables so there isn't a preponderance of square shapes in the room.

As for rugs, you can either do a rug with a lot of texture like the shag you are mentioning, knowing that is will be hell to keep clean.

Or you can do one with a lower pile, which I do recommend.

As for type of rug, that really depends on your taste.

You can do a modern one as suggested above with swirls, or poka dots, or circles and squares.

Or you can find a Persian hand knotted rug with a lot of blue in in it. The other colors will just blend in. Or a woven nomadic rug.

You can pick up your colors and interesting textures in your throw pillows.

I'd be interested to see how the L shape positioning of the sofas works. It occurred to me when I looked at your photo.

One other thing, could you get white shades for your lamps? With the dark furnishings, the black shades seem dull.

I like the wavy rug you posted. A rug like this would bring color and pattern into the mix.
