That looks like a katydid. It's a kind of grasshopper and yes it will eat the leaves. Neem oil won't do much to kill it unless you spray it right on it, but then you're just drowning it, lol! Chewing insects like this are best dealt with by Spinosad. That's the pesticide's name, look for it in the ingredients in several brands. Bonide's is Captain Jack's Dead Bug Brew, there are other brands too. Spray it in the early evening when bees have gone home. Once it's dry, when the bees come back in the morning, they can walk on it and it won't hurt them. An insect has to ingest it for it to work, so the kadydid will have to eat a little more leaf with Spinosad on it, but then they stop eating and die. Spinosad is good to have on hand too if you get Citrus Leaf Miner, which usually shows up in the fall and spring.

Ok thanks! I will do that. I think you may have helped me in the past too. I also have 3 evergreen rhododendrons and I think you helped me decide where to place them and how to protect them. In any event every winter I am absolutely sure they have died, the leaves are so incredibly wilted, and then every spring they are still blooming nice enough for me. I think it has been at least 5 years. They don't appear to be growing hardly at all, but most of the wilted leaves seem to recover, and also new leaves come out to replace old ones, and enough blooms every year to keep me happy. When I got the rhododendrons, I mistakenly thought they would look nice in the winter, which they certainly do not in my climate, but spring makes up for that. In any event, it is amusing for me to see that an azalea will also play dead, and yet as I examine it again today, I am encouraged by your comments and also by its appearance, that it can make a good recovery, so I am eager to try repotting now. Everyone...take 10..put everything in prospective..this all started because I recommended pure oxygen bleach as opposed to a product containing mostly sodium carbonate. ..May you are correct that I didn't ask first why that person didn't buy the more pure form..I didn't think to ask that..I was only suggesting a better product IMO. I am sorry i rub you the wrong way May, I've looked back on past posts and realized...I'm not sure how to word it but I've always had the feeling I bug you..that's ok. Maybe I said something you didn't like or agree with, it doesn't really matter. I will say that up there^^^^ when I suggested someone cut to the chase and buy pure sodium percarbonate, I felt like you belittled me for saying it..you ask why I slam oxi boosters, as if I've done something wrong voicing my opinion on the added washing soda to it..am I not allowed to voice my opinion on a product because it might hurt someone's feelings..I was after all respectful, I did not slam a person, I told of my dislike of a product and why. I still can't understand how all of this happened, but I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I voiced an opinion on a product and that's that..last night I got a bit emotional over this, I was ready to bail out, but I thought about it..if I run out on this forum because someone doesn't like my views on a product..well that's just silly. I'm staying, everyone will not like the products I use, I won't like every product someone else uses, but I will voice my opinion as I would expect in return. And I hope that everyone knows that just because I don't like a product they may use doesn't mean I think less of that person..I don't judge someone on their laundry products.
