Hellebore transition from Inside to Outside?
Comments (1)I'd assume your hellebore is Helleborus niger, one of the earliest to bloom and the type most often referred to as "Christmas rose". This is perhaps the most cold hardy of any of the hellebores and really should be planted in the ground......hellebores are NOT houseplants :-) However, I do understand that in colder, snowy climates, now is not the right time to be outdoors planting. I'd suggest you keep it in the coolest possible location indoors and with some decent light if currently in bloom. If not in bloom now, I doubt it will generate any buds indoors - the conditions are just not suitable and any buds should already be formed. Water just enough to keep the soil barely moist and avoid water on the foliage - H. niger is prone to botrytis if kept too moist. And no fertilizer. Plant outside when temperature and soil conditions permit. You will likely need to transition the plant a bit from indoors to out - too severe a change in temperatures and growing conditions could put the plant in shock. A location that provides morning sun and some protection from hot afternoon conditions in summer is best. Well draining soil. Heavy snow cover can delay blooming of the plant in the landscape but in light or no snow (zone 7 and 8), the plant will often bloom on schedule in late December/early January (the Julian calendar, still observed in some eastern Europeans religions, marks Christ's birth on January 6). In colder, snowy climates it is not unusual for the plant to flower in February or March or even as late as April......in these situations, the common name of Christmas rose is a bit of a stretch :-))...See MoreWater/ice on outside of fridge or inside?
Comments (23)Theresse, FD/BF refridgerators with the ice/water dispenser on the door have more problems based on several sources. For one, having an icemaker in the refridgerator compartment, that's maybe opened often, or having incidental internal temperture variations especially during the humid months will effect icemaking production. Also, a FD/BF with the ice and water dispenser on the outside door is still a new idea pretty much. Only about five years old. Side x side models with ice and water service on the outside door has been around for forty or more years. As you should be aware the icemaker on a side by side is in the freezer compartment which is just fine even with the FD/BF. That is, there are fewer service calls and complaints regarding the ice service. As far as everything else goes with water service on the inside of the door and ice service in the freezer, regardless of the style, is likely the better design. Also, in an attempt to give the most room as possible with the FD/BF the ice tray volume is not very big. Makes sense. So, the ability to recover the volume of ice used is a major demand placed upon the unit. What does that mean? only time will tell. What I meant by the 25% comment is the following; Look at the volume of the tray...don't simply assume that there will always be ice filling the tray completely. Like I said, given the circumstances regarding FD/BF only, there will be a lack of ice. Bet on that! Especially, during those hot humid days of summer. So if you are an ice person keep those ice cube trays like your mother had stored in the freezer as a backup....See MoreInsulation job: from the inside or the outside?
Comments (13)Ignore R factors for a few days, until you get your mind comfortable with a couple other bigger concerns. kit, when you insulate better and better you transform your building into more and more like a plastic bag. In winter, if you breathe into a plastic bag for a couple seconds you will see dew in it. Or frost. kit, learn about "dew point" ("rosée") in Your Climate, in your walls, in buidings like yours. It's deep inside your walls. It's probably not where the average person posting in this forum thinks it is. Even people from the warmer parts of Canada. In cold climates, it is a serious concern. Then when you insulate well it becomes a big thing to "manage". Ask the government guys for help in understanding this. They will know a lot about it. This is the Key to understanding why some houses rot and others don't, and why some have mold everywhere in their walls and others don't. The dew point is inside the walls; it causes rot. There is a lot of overnight freezing and thawing in walls, for many months in your climate. When the walls have higher humidity in them that before, this problem is worsened. Polyisocyanurate is good, and spray-on is good, and sheets too. Foil-faced polyisocyanurate sheets are great too: do you have a fireplace? Comments (8)I agree with Junglegal about getting what you really love :} and getting everything ready and planned then planting in the late Feb or so. You can do it little by little...buy some black cow a couple of bags at a time and work it into the soil. Everyone has their own gardening preferences. Previously, I didn't mind keeping things in check every couple of weeks. Now my "style" is tropical and LOW maintenance...I'll dump some mulch or fertilizer down 1 or 2 x a year, take my clippers and dead head or trim back a garbage can worth...but that's it lol! No more covering plants in the winter, no more digging up heliconas and gingers that are threatening to take over the whole yard, no more trying to keep hedges trimmed, etc :} So it also depends on your interest and energy....See More- 5 years ago
