Need shower niche advice - anyone have a glass shelf installed?
Comments (22)I still have time to change this plan, and order a marble shelf to go in. How would this be done? The bottom tiles would be set, and then the shelf gets set on the top edge of the installed tiles. The top tiles then get cut to take into account the thickness of the stone and still keep alignment with the tiles on either side, and then they get installed. As for objecting to installing on top of the tile, yes and no. ANY kind of intrusion through the tile and waterproofing is cause for concern. But that can also be alleviated if it's "corked" back up with caulking. This one below, I'm showing you the unfinished pictures so you can see how it's done with the stone sitting on the tile's edges:...See MorePlease help! Need to locate water hammer in pipes
Comments (2)jjam, Auto parts stores sell something that looks like a stethascope with a tube on the end for listening. There should be an access panel for the shower piping if there is a closet on the other side of the wall. Sounds like the piping was not installed/anchored properly. If you can see piping in the basement, try to slightly bang on the piping to see if you can recreate the noise. Shock absorbers or water hammer arrestors work best when placed between the last two fixtures on the longest run of piping. Air chambers were typically placed on the incoming main water supply line, but become water logged and require draining to introduce air so they work again. If the holes that were drilled for the water lines are larger than the piping, you can put a small piece of pipe insulation into the gap to avoid the banging. The big box stores also sell "J hooks" for supporting piping runs. Hope that helps, Dan Martyn...See MoreWater Running While Brushing Teeth?
Comments (34)In my area, more water is used and wasted for commercial and agricultural purposes than in houses. In houses, more water is used outside than inside for most people. It costs more money to use a resource like water prudently than to waste it. Outdoors, it's all about removing/reducing lawns and using drip emitters and drought tolerant plants, etc. If you're concerned about reducing indoor water use, have you -replaced any old toilets with the newest models that use less water? -replaced a top loading washing machine with a front loader? -replaced old faucets and shower heads with low flow models? -replaced your dishwasher within the last 5 years (the newer the model, the less water used) ? Until all of that is done, there's probably no need to worry about whether you do or don't keep water running while brushing your teeth. That's hardly even a drop in the bucket....See MoreHelp me choose shower, steam shower module, or DIY custom steam shower
Comments (6)Creative Tile, I also have heard good things.....my plan has totally changed, you can search my name and find my design thread. I'm now doing a 48" neo angle. I want to go USG because they make the custom pan with the drain where I want it, and trimming these pans will obviously create some strange aesthetics at change of plane w/ wall. Problem is, no one wants to sell me one! Here in NJ, only distributor within 90 minutes are HD stores. I call them, and they don't know the custom pan exists. Local tile guy has Wedi, but very pricey, and it doesn't seem ideal for a neoangle curb, also no custom pan. I'm assuming you may have a connection with someone who will sell me one? Online USG email support for neo angle sent me back to uninformed home depot, and a general instruction which doesn't address how to wrap the 135 deg. angle. I'm going to call them one last time, if not I'll take my chances with kerdi membrane with a mud deck. 1 question on the USG product...if i go with the new ultralight foam, does it require full membrane, or just the seams? If it requires full membrane, should I just use fiberrock as it will probably be much cheaper? Any ideas how to do the 135 neoangle curb, I'm probably just going to borrow kerdi methods over at johnbridge, and use the sealant for any questionable corners . Thanks so much for your help!...See Moremillworkman
