Can you have white cabinets if you have a white floor?
Comments (12)Look again -- those are not all contemporary kitchens, though many are. The traditional ones do have a clean, updated feel to them. Also keep in mind that many folks use rugs or mats in the work areas of their kitchens and you can certainly add some color (not to mention warmth or comfort while working) that way. Also consider wall color. White walls are part of the more contemporary look. Bring in some color and warmth and it can go either way. Style of the cabinets and other details make a big difference too. So often, it is not what you do as much as how you do it. My new kitchen now has dark wood floors, but here is a photo of the old kitchen -- off white and off white/beige tile that looked like travertine. We liked the white cabinet/nearly white floor combination (yes, walls are lacking color here -- we stripped the dark teal background floral paper), but the contractors messed up the tile so badly that we wound up replacing the floors. This was a very popular look in mostly very traditional kitchens here and most have been updated with new counters and appliances, but many still have light floors with both medium to dark wood and white cabinets....See MoreDark Gray cabinets with fantasy brown granite countertops?
Comments (16)Not enough contrast. The gray would have to be warm (more beige rather than gray) for BOTH cabinets AND back splash. A soft white is stunning against the HEAVY MOVEMENT of Fantasy Brown. I don't think your wife can appreciate the heavy impact that stone will have. You do NOT need any more "colour" in this space. The counters and the floors have PLENTY. Comments (6)I think sometimes gray, or cool, can help tone down a lot of traditional browns, but like others said, the spectrum is huge so pictures would help. My mom has a huge set of high quality library bookcases and entertainment furniture straight out of the 80’s and 90’s. She wanted to use them in her basement when they built their new house. They chose a light gray and the undertones seem to highlight the warmth in the oak without screaming “yellow oak.” It’s really like magic, it all looks updated and much more balanced. I think a warm color would have looked awful in her case, it would be suffocating. It did help that they were able to plan lighting at the same time, and the tile she used in the kitchenette is a fantastic blend of warm and cool. It turned out so well, she kept a high end tan/gold/camel pull-out sofa she was planning to replace! She found a rug and pillows that were more neutral and cool and the sofa looks almost like a color focal point now....See MoreWould BM classic gray go with medium brown kitchen cabinets?
Comments (9)I know the popular trend is to paint everything in the house one color, a neutral or white (did beige, then gray/greige, now white or off white). After everything is neutral we start seeing posts - how do I add color. Is your wardrobe just neutrals and whites? Is your life really that bland? I had a white on white home 30 years ago, but had a ton of artwork and colorful furniture that was classic Scandinavian at the time. It was beautiful, but it wasn't really me. I have never again had just neutral walls. I don't want to live in a home that looks like a builder spec home. Other people who see my home often ask me to help them pick colors for their home. So how do I pick colors? I first look at the things that must stay (have never had the luxury of not having to keep something (flooring, cabinets, counter tops, treasured or newer furniture). I then look at the things people own - we buy things because we love the colors - Wall art, sculptures, their wardrobes, jewelry. There is almost always a theme to the things people buy and most of the time their things and the colors that bring them joy are colors that look good on them. Our brains imprint colors associated with wonderful memories and when we see these colors we actually produce dopamine and get a rush of joy. Who doesn't like when they feel like a 10? Think about the colors that make your heart sing and how they work with the things you own. Think about which colors you want in your home and how the colors make you feel - some will energize you, some make you feel relaxed and calm. Which colors do you want in each room, how will the color you use in the kitchen flow into the dining room and from the dining room into the living room? (I usually pick 3 colors - for really large homes, bigger families, more rooms I may go to 5 colors). Once you know what colors you love and want in your home it is time to pick your neutral - that background color that works with your colors. With my colors a taupe works better than anything else. For each of my sisters we picked neutrals that worked with their color palette. After picking the neutral I pick a white that works with the neutral for the trim, ceilings, cabinets. . . My guess is that the whites in your closet are either white or ivory and not ecru. Why, because White Dove looks dirty to you and so will an ecru shirt. At the end of the day you end up with a coordinated home that is unique and timeless instead of something someone else decided should be popular. A designer showcased a house on Houzz and I saved the pics because she did exactly what I am talking about . Here are the pics Here are the colors I picked for my house Things I love Flooring that was a must stay Paint and other colors Everything together...See MoreRelated Professionals
