keeping soap scum at bay
Comments (15)My goodness, I had no idea. Will any liquid soap do? DH has skin allergies so I am limited to very mild soaps (like unscented Dove bar soap). I hope I won't have to choose between the health of my husband's skin and the cleanliness of my new shower. :-) And while we're on the topic of keeping our glorious new tile clean :-) I wonder what else is good to do? I do have a squeegee and have been using that after each shower. My excellent tile guy also wanted to recommend a spray that can be used regularly to keep mildew etc at bay, but he couldn't remember the name. Does anyone here know of such a thing?...See Morewhat's best to clean soap scum off shower before caulking?
Comments (4)Hello...Had to do the same as you and recaulk shower walls to bathtub and used a good commercial bathroom cleaner and a scotch brite pad and scrubbed well. Rinse clean and then dried with a towel, I then used 100% acetone on a rag to clean the region to be caulked, but check first to make sure the acetone won't dissolve your tub surround material! Use a q-tip in a tiny out of the way spot and rub surface to see if it attacks the plastic...if it dulls it or comes off on the q-tip then use alcohol instead. I did this twice, then blowed dried the joint well with hot hair dryer to make sure no water was present. Then used a bathroom grade 100% silicone caulk which prevents mildew from forming. Read the labels carefully as many silicone products don't retard mildew growth...it should say bathroom on the label. Comments (2)There really isn't anything labeled for "soap scum" cleaning that is truly marble safe. They are all acid based instead of pH neutral as stone requires. The best approach is preventative, as outlined above. The big one is to eliminate bar soap and many hair conditioners from your personal care routine. They will cause buildup on surfaces that can only be safely removed via old fashioned scrub brushes and manual effort....See MoreSaved By Soap Scum
Comments (13)mmmm12; I was hired to tear this out, but after explaining all the alternatives to the homeowner, she wanted to live with it. It's a guest bath, will hardly get used, it's on a concrete slab and is lower than the adjacent floor so no water from the shower is going uphill to ruin the new hardwood installation. They couldn't build houses fast enough here in southwestern Florida a decade ago. Apparently inspection couldn't keep up. The homeowner and I will probably be dead before this needs replacement....See Morefunctionthenlook
