Furniture Placement in odd shaped living room
Please help me figure out how to arrange our current furniture in our odd shaped living room. We have a large couch and an oversized chair, with ottoman that we'd like to keep for the time being (I think it is dark for the space but we like them). A larger coffee table and a side table that could stay or go in favor of something more suited to space. Could also add a chair or another piece of furniture if needed. There is a "nook" in the back corner next to the stair rails that I was hoping to make a reading nook in the future.
I tried to take shots of our 3D model from different angles. Our room is a bit torn up right now so I only took one "real" photo.
I can't get my mind off of arranging the furniture towards the fire place. But looking at so many other design photos almost none of them have the furniture honoring the fireplace. I'm at a loss of what to do.

Comments (9)I think I would swap the smaller sofa and put it n the tv room and put the larger one centered, floating in front of the fireplace. I'm not usually a fan, but since your window is off center, I'd try putting the small sofa at and angle, right of the window and face it to a tv in the opposite corner. For the bay window in the formal space, I think it would be a great spot to put your barrel chairs with a 36" round table height side table. What a wonderful place to have morning coffee, read a magazine, play a game of chess, etc or even maybe do a small puzzle. Comments (10)The room seems big, but so much of the perimeter is kind of useless as a location for new seating. Casegoods could fill some of those voids visually, especially opposite the FP where you need a large counter balancing piece like a bookcase and then some large art in the stairwell. I would plan to ground the seating on a large rug. You can tape out some versions for size using the stair railing and fireplace as your boundaries while aligning the rug to some of the windows. The sofa would have its back to the stairwell end of the room. Two chairs would sit where your large sofa is now and, if you do the 4 swivel chair arrangement, two would sit with their backs to the upper landing. Three boys and a dog need space to run around and play, as you said. Comments (15)If it was just my husband and I it would be fine the way it is. with children it’s a huge safety issue because if they stand on the couch they can go down the stairs. It’s driving me crazy to say the least. I feel others might look at the room differently than I would and would have a better idea...See More

5 years agolast modified: 5 years agoThis is all good. Have you tried placing the sofa parallel to the railing? The armchair could either be perpendicular to the fireplace on the left of the sofa or facing the sofa (correction:facing the fireplace), placed to the right of the sofa. Sofa and chair are the orange blobs :-)

I think that a sofa perpendicular to your back windows is a great anchor to the room. Corner fireplaces are frustrating (I’ve had one) and I think it’s rare that angling the largest piece of furniture is the best choice.

5 years agoI think these are my favorite! i never would have pushed the furniture over that far towards the stairs. But I like it.
what would you put in the back "nook" and then now at the bottom right of the layout (which leads into the dining room)? anything? Kids toy organization will go somewhere for the next few years :)

5 years agohere is a few pics of re-arrangement. I'm thinking it looks crowded and pushed to the side. Can couch move over even though it wouldn't be in middle of windows then? Ottoman to the other side with couch?
