Comments (66)No one has mentioned acidity. I have similar mixed success here in zone 5a in Maine. My soils are pretty acid, but I have some planted in a shady well drained humus/sandy woods, some in a sunny bed (these are growing the most, and are standing up well to some invasive neighbors), and some in the shaded trashy soil beside my house. Something (maybe my cat) dug up some of the new ones, others are doing OK. I plan to do a bit of dividing--what I have is mostly from divisions I rescued from an overgrown bed so I'm not sure the varieties. One is small green with intense red flowers; one is marbled/mottled red and green, one is deep purple. I adore all of them. I had one of the ginger-colored ones, peach melba I think, which didn't make it. If I have something that I think comes from a more alkaline area (the default assumption here where most of the soil was peat bog a few centuries ago) I throw in some marble chips, sprinkle randomly with wood ashes, etc. Especially western plants tend to want a much more alkaline soil. Ph is always my first suspect when things don't thrive. So, what pH do these puppies prefer? And do preferences differ across the varieties?...See MoreNew Growth on My Finger Lime...
Comments (15)Well, I just verified, from numerous sources, that the Australian Finger Lime IS an "Understory" tree used to getting light from underneath a tree canopy. Thanks Sultry Jasmine! You probably saved my Finger Lime. It is now in it's new happy place and should get about 4 hours of sun. I'll definately be keeping an eye on it. I'm Originally from Chicago, Toni. Don't you guys in IL get SUPER LONG days during the summer!? Which, of course, are made up for by the 6 hours of daylight in Winter. I am very lucky to have a big sunny patio. Citrus that are getting the 11.5 hours right now are my screening wall citrus: Temple Tangor, Kaffir Lime #1, Oro Blanco Grapefruit, Minneola Tangelo, Rangpur & Palestine Sweet Lime, Sanguinelli and Moro blood oranges, Yuzu and my Cara Cara Pink Orange. Just removed the horsetail reeds that were supposed to be blocking the hideous pool eqt (Never grew about 3 feet) and am in the process of replacing with home made espaliered citrus. Which will also be getting about 11 hours. These are going to be two per container citrus: Bergamot and Seville Sour Orange, Bearss #2 and Kaffir Lime #2, Tarocco #2 and Moro Blood Orange #2. All of which will be grafted to be 2 in 1 trees once I get my budwood from UCR. Is it Friday yet? Comments (149)Barb...both happy and sad....Happy he is moving forward with his life. Knowing he will go far as long as he stays focused on his studies, and learns to quit being so wasteful. Sad because he is moving on and we will be seeing very little of him in the next 4 years or so. We havent made any new life adventures yet. House needs some TLC. I suppose first we will get used to having a home with just us and the critters and go from there. Chell I used to be a dog and cat groomer. I loved it too. But my employer was a deedeedee. Never had the money to pay me each week and always "owed" me. And she never gave me my tips either. Then at the end of the year she reported more earnings for me than what I had really made.Fortunitly I kept records and proved my case and won, so make sure you don't let the same happen to you. I have kept my clippers, blades and accessories and still will do a neighbors dog or two once in awhile to keep my skills up.....but don't miss the hair stuck in places I did'nt know existed....lol. Love all the pictures the everyone post. Always enjoy seeing ya'lls babies. Regina...See MoreGinger
Comments (14)She probably gave you alpinia zerumbut since she said it will make a windscreen. It gets HUGE. I don't think it goes dormant even in San Antonio. Blooms on old growth so you won't get blooms this year. Not edible, not poisonous but will leave a terrible aftertaste. Tolerates full sun, drought, etc. Hard to dig when established. The variegated tends to be a little shorter but will also grow in full sun. The pinstripe ginger does need a little more shade or it burns. Not nearly as tall, blooms a nice bloom early/mid-spring. Costus, curcuma, hedychiums all tend to be a little shorter & like a little more shade than alpinias. I have about 50 gingers in the backyard. I love the peacocks and dancing girls. All dormant right now. Most of the others, including Dr. Moy don't go dormant for me. I'm not big on watering either! Tally HO!...See MoreDenise Becker
