Color experts, please help--what color should we paint our house?
Comments (20)Thank you! So much great feedback. Sadly, the paint job is a necessity rather than just aesthetics -- paint on the back side is failing pretty badly & peeling off in layers. (After reading up on the paint forum, I think it was just too many layers of latex on top of old oil paint without adequate prep.) Maybe we will keep it close to current color. I'm not sure what color it is, but I'll have to stop by the BM store and pick up a tab for Briarwood. I think those color visualizers are just a bit off, at least on our monitor -- Down Pour is a very smurf-y blue on my screen. Luckily, SW store is right down the street. Of the SW colors, we liked Mineral Deposit -- gray, but not quite so dark. Johnmari, my wife said exactly that about warm trim looking bad with cool gray field color. I just want to get away from the current ultrawhite, just tone down a bit but not too much. Shutters? I think we will someday, after we've finished the essentials. Of course, being picky, I don't want to just screw aluminum shutters that don't match window size on there, so might be a while given that real shutters & hardware are pricey. The suggestion about doing the sash black is good--that could look really sharp and make the windows pop a bit more until we can dress it up a bit more with shutters. Absolutely agreed on the landscaping solutions. Could be more varied and it would add a lot. THANK YOU for all your suggestions, such a helpful group & nice little corner of the internet....See MoreDoes this paint color work for you? Or should I change it?
Comments (32)OP here. Just to clarify, yes, at the moment all that I can change is the colour of the bottom panel. However, all opinions are valuable, and you know, eventually the roof will have to be redone... ;) The front of the house is the only part that has been painted with the Slate colour, but the back of the house has been painted with the Driftwood, the trim paint, and the soffiting paint, and the scaffolding has been returned. Pic: Having watched my husband stand on a ladder on top of the scaffolding and practically hang out over the edge to paint the top, we're so not doing that again. :) We are limited in colours due to the formulation of this paint. I would have loved something more greeny, but didn't like the few greens they had. On the other hand, this does seem to read as green in different lights (our neighbors thought it was green). I quite like the driftood colour, and in real life, it goes nicely with the brick. Oddly enough, I had suggested painting one board where the stucco hardi panel and cedar join up, and DH had rejected that idea - will be looking at it again, though. DH is thinking of various options for the posts, some of which can be painted and some can't, so no decisions there as yet. Heck, we haven't even got the bobcat in yet to re-level the front of the house and then build a new walkway... The hardi-panel can be found here: http://www.jameshardie.com/builder/products_siding_hardiepanelSiding.py It's limited to 4x8, 4x9, or 4x10 sheets, so the plan is to have that 4 foot tall strip at the bottom, due to not being able to get all the cedar siding cleanly off the house. Think DH also wanted to use this for some manly reason of his own. Again, thanks to all for comments and work! Comments (11)Hey there jessep! New Berlin - small world! I I think you are definitely right about keeping the soffit light because it is over two feet wide. I'm still stuck on the idea of chestnut bronze for the fascia, gutters & windows. Leaving the soffit white (alabaster) would also allow me to leave the garage door white because I definitely don't want to paint or replace that since it's in good shape. The roof is brown and what's worse that it's got kind of a mahogany/violet undertone. I would much prefer one the color of the example picture. I will also take your advice regarding large color samples to help us make any decisions easier. Thanks for that! I was talking with another friend this weekend who said that he thought I should stay away from a black facia because it may fade and get ashy looking. To replace the barn red maybe we'll try matching the color of our brick to help make the house look all-brick? I don't know......See MoreColor Pallete for Living/Dining area with Warm Woods
Comments (2)Hi Danielle, I'm Poorvi. I have created a mock-up of your room to help you visualize better. Like you stated, I have added a chandelier, art above the couch and a large bookshelf in the corner of the room. I wouldn't crowd the place too much. Adding swivel chairs would be a great move if you want this room to function as an entertainment center (to watch tv), a conversation space, or a library. I placed a sideboard in the dining and also a crockery unit(can be ignored if it isn't necessary). Add rugs in both areas to pull the space together. For wall: I have used SW Pineapple Cream to compliment all the wooden elements in the room. Let me know if you want me to work on more color and layout.
