But before I took any herbs or other recommended sleep aids, I think I'd discuss it with my physician.

Here's some info from WebMD. Overall they say "Ashwagandha has a lot of uses. But so far, there isn't enough information to judge whether it is effective for any of them."

Experts don't sell supplements/herbal medicines.

At the bottom of the front web page of Becker's site, it says:

"The products and statements on this website have not been evaluated by the Food & Drug Administration. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease." That's probably the one piece of his advice to consider seriously.

I'd read about it on WebMD before posting here. I noted the phrasing used throughout, such as "Possibly Safe", "Possibly Effective", "Insufficient Evidence", etc. That's why I wanted to hear from people with personal experience. I have regular doctor's appointments and sleep is a topic that keeps coming up. The things I've tried so far haven't been very helpful.

I'm pretty sure he is no longer practicing medicine. he had a serious bout with cancer years back, which is probably when he quit practicing.

that 'warning' is on all of my supplements. check yours... anything you pick up in any store should say the same thing.

If you see any notices that he has been fined or arrested for now 'practicing' without a license, please post that here on the forum.

I take it to help even out my adrenal hormones. It has been used for years for this purpose.

desertsteph, he never was a medical doctor. He's an osteopath. You may not know the difference but there are differences that are important. I'm not surprised if he no longer practices, he probably makes a carloads of money selling supplements. Intimate as other do, without any proof, that the various substances produce effects, then with the unregulated and uninspected substances, buy low, sell high, live the good live.

For all of you who say "I take it for....." about this or other unproven/untested supplements, does it matter to you that most of these things, sold at high prices, haven't been found to have any beneficial effects at all? You may as well take peanut butter and say it helps you sleep, for instances, or calms your anxiety. It's no less likely to be the case.

Sure. But distinguish between informed decisions and uninformed ones. If you make an uninformed decision and later learn something that might have changed your initial decision, do you stick with what you're doing and blow off or discredit the newly learned insights or instead reconsider the original decision?

you need to look that up. Several of my doctors over the years have been DOs. They are doctors.
